More than 2,700 IT staff work on all U-M campuses, schools and colleges, libraries, research institutes, Michigan Medicine, and administrative units.

Hundreds more are in leadership and technology-related roles in U-M departments and units.

Michigan IT - Mentor Program

OBJECTIVE

Provide staff with opportunities to form U-M relationships that help them perform better in their jobs and grow their careers.

HIGHLIGHTS

Match mentors + mentees for 4 months 1:1 and in groups

Michigan IT - Slack Workspace

  • Launched in early 2022
    • Communities of Practice piloted the workspace
    • Now ~4000 members

  • Unique to Michigan IT Slack
    • Allows communication across all campuses
    • Similar to umichWORKS - but members can create & post in public channels
    • Great way to share kudos (at right)

Michigan IT - Hacks with Friends

  • Event
    • Two-day* Hackathon where members of Michigan IT (and beyond) come together to form teams to work on “hacks” or projects.
  • History
    • An evolution of an idea that began in 2013 with “MSIS Hack Day.”
    • In the spring of 2015 the event was expanded to include participants from ITS, MCIT, and the School Dentistry and rebranded as “Hacks With Friends”.
  • Benefits
    • Networking - Work with members from all over Michigan IT.
    • Development - Pick up and try out new skills.
    • Enhance the University - More and more projects continue on and become services.

  • 2022 event is the 9th annual Symposium!
    • Theme: Helping Shape the Future of Learning, Research, and Care
    • Goals: Create connections, Professional development opportunity, Showcase innovation

      • 20 breakout sessions & 16 posters
  • 500+ attendees annually on average from A2, Mich Med, Dearborn & Flint

    • 2 chairs & 23 planning committee members

A website and monthly newsletter, provides updates, answers questions, and sparks conversation about campus-wide efforts to improve IT services and invest in technologies that support U-M’s current and future needs.

New, rotating Steering Committee members starting in FY24 & new program committees focused on:

  • Workforce: Provide opportunities for people across U-M to develop and enhance technology capabilities and skills. Contribute to recruiting and retaining a diverse and inclusive community of technology professionals.
  • Collaboration: Help build and nurture relationships that support continuous learning and accelerate the creation of value for our University of Michigan community.
  • Innovation: Explore and leverage new technologies, showcase novel/new/unique solutions, and collaboratively solve problems using innovative approaches.
  • Promotion: Share and promote the impact provided by the U-M technology community.
