Focusing on basic academic skills like reading, writing, and math might have worked back then, but now you guys face a whole new world of challenges AND opportunities.

In order to reach your goals and dreams, you need not only strong academic skills but solid “soft skills” as well.
Soft Skills are the stuff of social development. They empower us to manage ourselves, relate with others, and work together to be successful both in our careers and in our lives.

CASEL, the Collaborative for Academic and Social-Emotional Learning, lists five areas of skills that we need to develop to be successful personally and with others in our lives.

Self-Awareness:
Know who you are as a person.

Control yourself and follow the rules and expectations.

One of the ideas behind social-emotional learning is that as we become stronger, more respectful, and more responsible as individuals, our schools, our families, and our communities grow as well.
