OVERVIEW

Gang violence in Cleveland, Ohio, presents a persistent challenge, impacting community safety and stability. Factors such as poverty, lack of opportunities, and social inequalities contribute to its prevalence. Law enforcement and community organizations are actively working to address the root causes and implement intervention strategies. There was a 34% decrease in gunshot wound hospital visits between 2021 (156.5 per 100k residents) and 2022 (102.5 per 100k residents).

PROBLEM STATEMENT

Gang violence in Cleveland, Ohio, presents a complex challenge rooted in a difference in level and historical factors. The cycle of violence is perpetuated by limited opportunities, poverty, and a lack of access to resources for young people. The young people often turn to gangs in search of identity, protection, and financial survival. The cycle of violence is further fueled by intergenerational trauma, the prevalence of drugs and firearms, and inadequate mental health and social support systems.

OBJECTIVES

  • Reduce risk factors for gang involvement among youth. Gang violence often stems from a lack of opportunity, belonging, and protection in young people’s lives.
  • Strengthen community together and reduce social isolation. Gang violence thrives in neighborhoods where people feel isolated, unsafe, and unsupported.
  • Provide support and opportunities for gang members to exit the gang lifestyle Breaking free from gang life is difficult and dangerous without the right support systems.

PROPOSED SOLUTION

  • Invest in Community-Based Programs: Support initiatives that provide education, job training, and mentorship for at-risk youth to prevent gang involvement and promote long-term success.�
  • Enhance Collaboration and Coordination: Strengthen partnerships between law enforcement, community organizations, and social services to improve communication and effectively address gang-related issues.�
  • Implement Evidence-Based Interventions: Use strategies like of behavioral therapy and conflict resolution training to help individuals disengage from gangs and promote community togetherness and safety.

SPECIAL THANKS

  • Implementing after-school activities and job training programs can offer alternatives to gang affiliation by keeping young people engaged and empowered.
