Week #3: Observe

Big Idea:

I notice the world around me and can look more closely at things and ideas.

This week we will practice the studio habit called Observe. This means to look closely at the world around you. Let’s start with a video.

Take a photo!

Find an object from nature that you think is beautiful or interesting.

​

This can be something you find today or something you have saved from a different day.

Directions:

​

1. Choose an object from nature.

​

• Take a photo. Be sure to get close to the object and move away other things in the picture that would be distracting.

​

• Type or tell about your observations.

​

• Respond with your picture and observations on Seesaw.

​

I took this photo while on a walk in my neighborhood. I observed that the tree bark had peeled away from the base of the tree. It left a heart shape in the tree. I did not expect to find a heart shape in nature.

Drawing from Observation

The artist Georgia O’Keeffe loved to observe flowers and seashells up close. She painted many details.

​

Find an object that you want to observe closely.

Directions:

1. Find a small object. Examples: a toy car, a shell, a Lego person, a flower.
2. ​

​

• Draw with pencil so you can erase. You can add color later. It should take up most of the paper. Spend as much time as you need to get all of the details. Don’t rush!
• Take a photo of your artwork.
• Respond with your photo on Seesaw.
