Joseph Smith has done more for our salvation than anyone except Jesus Christ
Joseph Smith has done more for our salvation than anyone except Jesus Christ
SCRIPTURE
3 Joseph Smith, the Prophet and Seer of the Lord, has done more, save Jesus only, for the salvation of men in this world, than any other man that ever lived in it. In the short space of twenty years, he has brought forth the Book of Mormon, which he translated by the gift and power of God, and has been the means of publishing it on two continents; has sent the fulness of the everlasting gospel, which it contained, to the four quarters of the earth; has brought forth the revelations and commandments which compose this book of Doctrine and Covenants, and many other wise documents and instructions for the benefit of the children of men; gathered many thousands of the Latter-day Saints, founded a great city, and left a fame and name that cannot be slain…
- Doctrine and Covenants 135:3
Joseph Smith has done more for our salvation than anyone except Jesus Christ
Robert D. Hales
Former Member of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
I testify that the work of the Prophet Joseph Smith is the Savior’s work. In the Lord’s service the path is not always easy. It often requires sacrifices, and we will likely experience adversity. But in serving Him, we discover that His hand is truly over us. So it was for Wycliffe, Tyndale, and thousands of others who prepared the way for the Restoration. So it was for the Prophet Joseph Smith and all who helped usher in the restored gospel. So it is and will be for us.
The Lord expects us to be as faithful, as devoted, as courageous as those who went before us. They were called to give their lives for the gospel. We are called to live our lives for the same purpose. In these last days we have special reason to do so…[H]istory and prophecy laid the groundwork for the Restoration of the gospel through the Prophet Joseph Smith.

On a Golden Springtime(Children’s Songbook #88)
MUSIC
1. On a golden springtime,
underneath the ground,
A tiny seedling lay asleep
until the sun shone down.
Awake, awake, O little seed!
Push upward to the light!
The day is bright.
With all your might,
push upward to the light!
Words: Virginia Maughan Kammeyer, b. 1925. © 1989 IRI
Music: Crawford Gates, b. 1921. © 1989 IRI
2. On a golden springtime,
Jesus Christ awoke
And left the tomb where he had lain;
the bands of death he broke.
Awake, awake, O sleeping world!
Look upward to the light,
For now all men may live again.
Look upward to the light!
3. On a golden springtime,
in a forest glade,
The Father and the Son appeared
as Joseph knelt and prayed.
Awake, awake, O nations all!
Receive the gospel light!
The gospel true is here for you.
Receive its glorious light!

Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith gave their lives for the gospel of Jesus Christ
Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith gave their lives for the gospel of Jesus Christ
SCRIPTURE
3 …He lived great, and he died great in the eyes of God and his people; and like most of the Lord’s anointed in ancient times, has sealed his mission and his works with his own blood; and so has his brother Hyrum. In life they were not divided, and in death they were not separated.
7 They were innocent of any crime, as they had often been proved before, and were only confined in jail by the conspiracy of traitors and wicked men; and their innocent blood on the floor of Carthage jail is a broad seal affixed to “Mormonism” that cannot be rejected by any court on earth, and their innocent blood … is a witness to the truth of the everlasting gospel that all the world cannot impeach; and their innocent blood on the banner of liberty, and on the magna charta of the United States, is an ambassador for the religion of Jesus Christ, that will touch the hearts of honest men among all nations; and their innocent blood, with the innocent blood of all the martyrs under the altar that John saw, will cry unto the Lord of Hosts till he avenges that blood on the earth. Amen.
- Doctrine and Covenants 135:3, 7
Joseph Smith and Hyrum Smith gave their lives for the gospel of Jesus Christ
M. Russell Ballard
Acting President of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
In June 1844, Hyrum was presented the choice to live or to lay down his life to glorify God and to “seal his testimony with his blood”—side by side together with his beloved brother Joseph. A week before the fateful trip to Carthage, where they were murdered in cold blood by an armed mob of cowards who had painted their faces to avoid detection, Joseph recorded that “I advised my brother Hyrum to take his family on the next steamboat and go to Cincinnati.” I still feel great emotion as I remember Hyrum’s reply: “Joseph, I can’t leave you.’’ So Joseph and Hyrum went to Carthage, where they became martyrs for Christ’s cause and name.
…[W]e should always remember the price Joseph and Hyrum Smith paid, along with so many other faithful men, women, and children, to establish the Church so you and I could enjoy the many blessings and all of these revealed truths we have today…I know that the Savior is pleased when we present Him an offering from our hearts in righteousness, just as He was pleased with the faithful offering of those remarkable brothers, Joseph and Hyrum Smith, and all other faithful Saints.

Stand for the Right(Children’s Songbook #159)
MUSIC
Our prophet has some words for you,
And these are the words:
“Be true, be true.”
At work or at play,
In darkness or light,
Be true, be true,
And stand for the right.

The Lord gives me counsel for my “journeyings” in life
The Lord gives me counsel for my “journeyings” in life
SCRIPTURE
1 The Word and Will of the Lord concerning the Camp of Israel in their journeyings to the West:
2 Let all the people of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and those who journey with them, be organized into companies, with a covenant and promise to keep all the commandments and statutes of the Lord our God.
11 And if ye do this with a pure heart, in all faithfulness, ye shall be blessed; you shall be blessed in your flocks, and in your herds, and in your fields, and in your houses, and in your families.
- Doctrine and Covenants 135:1-2, 11
The Lord gives me counsel for my “journeyings” in life
Dieter F. Uchtdorf
Of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles
Long, long ago, even before we were born, in an age dimmed by time and clouded from memory, we too were invited to embark on an adventure. It was proposed by God, our Heavenly Father. Accepting this adventure would mean leaving the comfort and security of His immediate presence. It would mean coming to earth for a journey filled with unknown danger and trial.
We knew it would not be easy. But we also knew that we would gain precious treasures, including a physical body and experiencing the intense joys and sorrows of mortality. We would learn to strive, to seek, and to struggle. We would discover truths about God and ourselves.
…And so, trusting the promises and power of God and His Beloved Son, we accepted the challenge. I did. And so did you.
- Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, “Your Great Adventure,”General Conference, October 2019
I Will Walk with Jesus(Primary 2020 Theme Song)
MUSIC
1. Jesus walked in wisdom; Jesus grew in truth.
He showed love to God and man while in His youth.
Jesus wants to guide me. Jesus shows the way,
Calling me to come and walk with Him each day.
2. I can grow like Jesus. I will try each day,
Promising to walk His path and there to stay.
Standing by my Savior, safe within His care,
Step by step I’ll follow, and His love I’ll share.
3. I will trust in Jesus. I will hear His call.
He will never leave me, even when I fall.
Jesus gives me power, lifts and comforts me,
Helping me to live and grow eternally.
Words: Mary M. Dodge, about 1831–1905
Music: W. K. Bassford, 1839–1902

Chorus:
As I walk with Jesus to my home above,
He will bless me with His Spirit and fill me with His love,
Change my heart forever and help me clearly see.
I will walk with Jesus, and He will walk with me.
The Lord gives me counsel for my “journeyings” in life
3:46
We can accomplish the Lord’s will as we follow His counsel
We can accomplish the Lord’s will as we follow His counsel
SCRIPTURE
4 And this shall be our covenant—that we will walk in all the ordinances of the Lord.
17 Go thy way and do as I have told you, and fear not thine enemies; for they shall not have power to stop my work.
18 Zion shall be redeemed in mine own due time.
42 Be diligent in keeping all my commandments, lest judgments come upon you, and your faith fail you, and your enemies triumph over you. So no more at present. Amen and Amen.
- Doctrine and Covenants 136:4, 17-18, 42
We can accomplish the Lord’s will as we follow His counsel
Donald L. Staehli
Former Member of the Seventy
Since we each have periodic challenges of obedience, we can take heart in President Hinckley’s encouragement “that the Lord will not give us commandments beyond our power to observe. He will not ask us to do things for which we lack…capacity.” The scriptures make it clear the Lord recognizes that many of us tend to stray from His counsel when all is going well with us, yet when trouble comes we seek after Him and His blessings. He has also warned us about the consequences of our straying: “And my people must needs be chastened until they learn obedience, if it must needs be, by the things which they suffer.”
Whether we are being chastened or challenged as we are being tossed to and fro on the seas of life, obedience to the teachings of our Savior and prophets will qualify us for…great promise[s] to those that keep God’s commandments…To the Savior’s call “Come, follow me” or to His admonition “If ye love me, keep my commandments,” our response should be clear and unequivocal.

Nephi’s Courage(Children's Songbook #120)
MUSIC
1. The Lord commanded Nephi to go and get the plates
From the wicked Laban inside the city gates.
Laman and Lemuel were both afraid to try.
Nephi was courageous. This was his reply:
2. The Lord commanded Nephi to go and build a boat.
Nephi’s older brothers believed it would not float.
Laughing and mocking, they said he should not try.
Nephi was courageous. This was his reply:
3. The Lord gives us commandments and asks us to obey.
Sometimes I am tempted to choose another way.
When I’m discouraged, and think I cannot try,
I will be courageous, and I will reply:
Chorus:
“I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.
I will go; I will do the thing the Lord commands.
I know the Lord provides a way; he wants me to obey.”

2:00
The Lord can bless me when I am struggling
The Lord can bless me when I am struggling
SCRIPTURE
28 If thou art merry, praise the Lord with singing, with music, with dancing, and with a prayer of praise and thanksgiving.
29 If thou art sorrowful, call on the Lord thy God with supplication, that your souls may be joyful.
30 Fear not thine enemies, for they are in mine hands and I will do my pleasure with them.
31 My people must be tried in all things, that they may be prepared to receive the glory that I have for them, even the glory of Zion; and he that will not bear chastisement is not worthy of my kingdom.
- Doctrine and Covenants 136:28-31
The Lord can bless me when I am struggling
Thomas S. Monson
President of the Church
2008 - 2018
Wherever we are in life, there are times when all of us have challenges and struggles. Although they are different for each, they are common to all…There will be times when you will walk a path strewn with thorns and marked by struggle. There may be times when you feel detached—even isolated—from the Giver of every good gift.
…We were not placed on this earth to walk alone. What an amazing source of power, of strength, and of comfort is available to each of us. He who knows us better than we know ourselves, He who sees the larger picture and who knows the end from the beginning, has assured us that He will be there for us to provide help if we but ask.
…I promise you that you will one day stand aside and look at your difficult times, and you will realize that He was always there beside you.
- President Thomas S. Monson, “We Never Walk Alone,”General Conference, October 2013
Peace in Christ(2018 Mutual Theme Song)
MUSIC
1. There is peace in Christ
When we learn of Him.
Feel the love He felt for us
When He bore our sins.
Listen to His words.
Let them come alive.
If we know Him as He is,
There is peace in Christ.
2. There is peace in Christ
When we walk with Him
Through the streets of Galilee
To Jerusalem.
Mend the broken hearts.
Dry the tear-filled eyes.
When we live the way He lived,
There is peace in Christ.
Chorus:
He gives us hope
When hope is gone.
He gives us strength
When we can’t go on.
He gives us shelter
In the storms of life.
When there’s no peace on earth,
There is peace in Christ.

How Did Joseph Smith Help Accomplish Heavenly Father’s Plan?
How Did Joseph Smith Help Accomplish Heavenly Father’s Plan?
SCRIPTURE
37 Therefore, marvel not at these things, for ye are not yet pure; ye can not yet bear my glory; but ye shall behold it if ye are faithful in keeping all my words that I have given you, from the days of Adam to Abraham, from Abraham to Moses, from Moses to Jesus and his apostles, and from Jesus and his apostles to Joseph Smith, whom I did call upon by mine angels, my ministering servants, and by mine own voice out of the heavens, to bring forth my work;
38 Which foundation he did lay, and was faithful; and I took him to myself.
39 Many have marveled because of his death; but it was needful that he should seal his testimony with his blood, that he might be honored and the wicked might be condemned.
- Doctrine and Covenants 136:37-39
How Did Joseph Smith Help Accomplish Heavenly Father’s Plan?
Gordon B. Hinckley
President of the Church
1995 - 2008
Joseph Smith lived as an instrument in the hands of the Lord for the establishment of His restored work in this, the dispensation of the fulness of times. He died in testimony of the Savior of mankind. The Church which was established through him carries the name of the Redeemer of the world. Out of a vision wondrous and beautiful, experienced in the prime and vigor of his life, the Prophet Joseph confirm[ed] the truth…and the glory of Him from whom he drew all of his inspiration as the Prophet of this great latter-day dispensation.
…We testify to the truth of the words of the Apostles and other witnesses of old. We further confirm the truth of the testimony of the great seer and revelator of this dispensation, the Prophet Joseph Smith, who 150 years ago gave his life as a witness of the Risen Redeemer. And by the power of the Holy Ghost, we give our personal testimony that He who was slain on Calvary’s hill rose from the dead, our Savior, whose sacrifice made possible the gift of eternal life to all who will keep His commandments.
- President Gordon B. Hinckley, “The Greatest Miracle in Human History,”General Conference, April 1994
I Will Follow God’s Plan(Children’s Songbook #164)
MUSIC
My life is a gift; my life has a plan.
My life has a purpose; in heav’n it began.
My choice was to come to this lovely home on earth
And seek for God’s light to direct me from birth.
I will follow God’s plan for me,
Holding fast to his word and his love.
I will work, and I will pray;
I will always walk in his way.
Then I will be happy on earth
And in my home above.
