Purpose:

The purpose of this experiment is to use heart rate to figure out if driving in real life or driving in a video game is more stressful.

3 of 10

Hypothesis:

If heart rate gets measured while participants drive in real life and drive in a video game, then video games will turn out with a higher heart rate.

Materials List:

  • Heart rate monitor (1)
  • golf cart (1)
  • Nintendo Switch (1)
  • Computer (1)
  • Grass Paint (2 Cans)

Procedure:

1-Set up driving course.

2-Test driving course.

3-Have test subject sit in driver’s seat of golf cart.

4-Put heart rate monitor on the test subject.

5-Check their resting heart rate.

6-Tell them that they can start driving the course.

7-When course is complete record their results.

8-Repeat steps 3-6 with renaming subjects.

9- Setup Mario Kart to get as close to real driving as possible. The course is Excitebike Ariena*. *See photos For settings.

10- Have test subject sit in a chair.

11-Put heart Rate monitor back on subject.

12-Measure subject’s resting heart rate.

13-Have subject race one course on Mario Kart.

14-When they are finished record heart rate.

15- Congratulate them and remove the heart rate monitor.

16-Repeat steps 10-15 with remaining subjects.

Data:

  • · [Remember to label the parts of your data table. You can use text boxes to label the sides.

Graphs:

  • · [describe the graphs which present the data]
  • · [you may need to create/print the graphs in another format - but you can paste the image of the graphs here]

Conclusions:

In conclusion the hypothesis was incorrect. The graphs show that difference in beats per minute is larger with the golf cart than mario kart. This shows that driving a golf cart is more stressful because the heart rate was higher.

[A conclusion explains the results and outcome of your investigation. It should either confirm (agree with) or reject (disagree with) your original hypothesis. Explain your results using the claims (patterns) and evidence (data) you gathered in the last step. Each claim you make MUST match the evidence from your data to validate that claim..]

Real World Connections:

One of my real world connections is simulations. As the data is showing us we now know that the Mario Kart (simulation) was less stressful. This means that the simulation does not raise stress like the real thing. So the people designing, testing, and training on a simulator need to make it as real as possible because of the fact that simulations aren’t as stressful as the real thing.

[Real World Connections explain how your project relates to the real-world, or how it pertains to everyday life. Why is it important to know the results of your project? Could it create new jobs or career opportunities? How does it benefit or apply to our everyday experiences?]
