Spelling words -

Learning to spell helps to develop a strong connection between the

letters and their sounds, which is important for both reading and writing.

The lists and activities below can be used at home, to help your child learn to spell - putting letters together correctly to form words.

Quick ways these lists can be used:

  • As flashcards, say and spell, out loud
  • Laid out, ask your learner to spell a particular word
  • Spell words using magnetic letters/letter cards
  • Practice writing words, in a variety of ways

(coloured pens, white board etc)

The goal is to be able to spell

the words automatically

Extra ways to practice -

Spelling practice isn’t just about rote memorisation. A combination of engaging visual, tactile and auditory activities will help learners conquer the challenge of remembering spelling words. Here are some more activities your learner can try:

  • Spell it! - Scrabble tiles

Using scrabble tiles, encourage your learner to spell as many words from the list as possible, without looking.

  • Can your learner self-check the

words they have spelt?

  • Remove a letter or two - can your learner figure out what letter is missing?

  • Spelling spiral -

Choose a list of 10 words for your learner to practice. Using different coloured pens, encourage them to practice writing the words around a spiral

Say each letter out loud as they write.

Can your learner practice

a different list of spelling words, by writing their way around a different shape? A square? A shape to fit

the word?

Using a variety of colours is great for helping a visual learner remember their spelling words!

  • Spelling Scramble!

Choose a list of words for your learner to practice. Encourage your learner to find the relevant letters in magazines or newspapers, and glue to words together.

Or maybe you could scramble a group of magnetic letters and see how many words your learner can make from the list !
