On-the-job-training

An apprenticeship is a program that prepares you for a specific type of job that meets a company’s need for highly skilled employees.

Apprenticeship combines on-the-job training and paid work, meaning you receive a wage throughout the program.

Requirements

Most programs require participants to be 18 years old, have a high school diploma or GED, and have the physical ability to perform the job.

Many trades require a certain level of math, and others will provide the necessary classes to get your skills up.

SO,WHAT IS AN APPRENTICE-SHIP?

A PAYCHECK

From the first day of your training, you get paid. You receive a wage while you’re training, and it continues to increase as your skills increase.

You are on the way to a fulfilling career with little to no debt.

TRAINING

You receive on the job training from experts in the field.

Classroom instruction is also part of the apprenticeship training. The classes you take will be directly related to your field and can be applied toward a degree or certification.

CERTIFICATION

At the end of your program you will receive a credential that is recognized nationwide.

The Office of Apprenticeship in the U.S. Department of Labor develops a list of nationally recognized apprenticeships.

How long?

How much?

Apprenticeship lengths vary by trade, but typically 2-5 years.

A few trades have the apprentice pay for classroom time and books, but the majority provide full scholarships to all students.

Researching Trades

Look for a career that interests you; don’t let the wages be the deciding factor. Call companies and union halls to ask if you can do an informational interview with one of their Journey workers.
