What is Civic Engagement?

The purpose of the Civic Engagement Diploma Seal is to prepare students to constructively participate in civic life and recognize their commitment to their community.

Civics is the study of citizenship, encompassing the rights, responsibilities, and obligations of citizens within a society.

Complete all social studies requirements for graduation

AP World History (10^th)

AP US History (11^th)

AP Economics + �AP Government (12^th)

AP Comparative Government (12^th)

Capstone Presentations:

11^th Grade – Civics presentation - explaining how their knowledge gained in social studies courses and activities has contributed to their civic engagement.

12^th Grade – Capstone presentation (after taking AP Seminar + AP Research – Present) on topic of their choice.

50 hours of community service (including 20 hours of civic engagement)

30 hours of this will come from taking social studies courses

20 remaining hours can be earned through:

Volunteering at voter registration or Board of Elections
Serving as a legislative page or intern
Attending City Council, County Commission, School Board, or Town Hall meetings

Pass the American Government Basic Skills test

aka – Citizenship Test

must score of 70% or higher. Administered on CTLS.

Partnership with Cobb County Board of Elections and Registration

We are working on curating some one-of-a kind experiences.
Four types of elections that students will get to be apart of throughout high school (general, primary, runoff, special)
Volunteering and behind the scenes opportunities of various aspects of the election process.
Hands on participation (collecting memory cards on election night, seeing the voting machines be certified, being a polling volunteer, attend board of election meetings, warehouse facility tour, and more)

Opportunities (continued)

Behind the Scenes

Provisional room, logic and accuracy testing (all equipment tested), prep center (deaths, felons, absentee ballots, and stickers), and registrar (data entry, GIS mapping, call center)

Attend Meetings

Board of Elections, School Board, or County Commissioners.

Student Hosted Voter Registration Drive

Once students have been trained on how to host a voter registration drive, they can plan and run a drive on their own time.

Poll Manager Pick-Up

Great weekend volunteer opportunity to be at HQ on a Sunday prior to an election to assist with each precinct manager coming to pick up their precinct packets.

Advance Voting Day Worker

Volunteer opportunity (even some on Saturday's and Sunday's during Advance Voting) to work a 5-hour shift at one of Cobb County’s satellite voting locations.
Greet voters, line management, shadow day workers, and assist where needed
