STRATEGIES

  • Total Communication- This will use any and all ways of forming communication with students who have a hearing condition. The teacher can use multiple strategies to find a way to teach the student with this exceptionality
    • Manually Coded English- Teacher can perform sign language while teaching.
    • Finger Spelling- Each word gets spelled out with hands

STRATEGIES

  • Sign Language- Hand signals and gestures help form communication. This type of strategy is a visual-spatial-language which requires the student to be constantly watching the instructor. There must also be enough room for the hand movements and gestures so that no one gets hit or injured. Sign language portrays a lot of intensity with the different motions.

ACCOMMODATIONS-HEARING CONDITIONS

  • Putting extra lighting in the room so all students can visualize without obstruction
  • Arranging the students with hearing exceptionalities towards the front so they can watch the teacher speak
  • Using a smart board to help with visuals and have students get out of their seat and physically interact with the lesson
  • Incorporate a voice-to-text program that displays everything that is said out loud
  • Minimize all background noises
  • Allowing students to write or type their work
  • Students can use a sign language interpreter if they feel comfortable
  • For emergencies, the lights will get flickered three times to alert everyone in the class
