MODEL OF GROOMING

1. TARGETING

A young person is identified and deliberately targeted because of their vulnerabilities.

2. DISILLUSIONMENT

A young person is made to feel disillusioned with/unhappy about the way things are.

They don’t believe that they can change their situation or make it better - they believe they cannot have their basic needs met.

3. ALTERNATIVE WAYS TO ACT

A young person is persuaded to think differently and encouraged to behave differently.

They are told it will make them feel better and give them what they need, however they will have to ask differently to achieve this.

4. JUSTIFY NEGATIVE BEHAVIOUR

The ‘groomer’ justifies their negative/harmful behaviour - either the way they are acting towards the young person or why they are persuading the young person to behave in certain ways (including keeping these behaviours secret or hidden).

5. REWARD/RECOGNITION

CHOICES V2.0 | Me in the World | Part 2 | Session Seven

8

The young person is given or promised recognition/reward for doing what they have been told to do.

This could be physical gifts such as money, clothes, trainers or other items, or could come in the form of exploiting the young person’s psychological needs (including one of the five basic needs).
