Exposure to extreme heat is dangerous for your health.

Chinatown is one of the hottest neighborhoods in Boston.

Why is Chinatown hot?

Chinatown is an Urban Heat Island, which means it has lots of pavement, buildings, and cars but few trees or green spaces. These surfaces trap heat and make the area hot.

During a heatwave, this extra heat makes it harder to cool down and increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

What will you learn in this workshop?

This workshop will teach you about the health effects of extreme heat and how you can protect yourself, your family, and neighbors in during a heat wave.

What makes Chinatown hot?

Chinatown has many urban design factors that make it hot, such as a lot of pavement, buildings, and cars but few trees or green spaces. These surfaces trap heat and make the area hot. They also increase air pollution in the neighborhood.

During a heatwave, this extra heat makes it harder to cool down and increases the risk of heat-related illnesses.

More shade, trees, and reflective roofs can help reduce the heat and keep the neighborhood cooler.

Causes of urban heat:

Densely packed buildings and less green spaces to absorb and radiate heat.
Large areas of asphalt and concrete surfaces that absorb more heat than natural ground.
Car/vehicle emissions contribute to heat generation.
Heat released from air conditioning units.
Lack of trees and vegetation that can provide shade and evapotranspiration.

25

What would you like to see in Chinatown to make the neighborhood cooler and to have cool space for you to go? 您希望在唐人街看到什么,让社区变得更凉爽,并为您提供凉爽的空间?_________________________________________________________________________
