Organizing & Plotting Data

Associations in Data

Lesson 1&2

8.SP.A.1: Construct and interpret scatter plots for bivariate measurement data to investigate patterns of association between two quantities. Describe patterns such as clustering, outliers, positive or negative association, linear association, and nonlinear association.

  • What patterns do you see in the data when it is graphed from the table?
  • How could you use the graph to estimate the perimeter for the isosceles, right triangles with a short side lengths of 0.75 cm, 5 cm, or 10 cm?

Is the relationship linear?

What is the equation of the line drawn to estimate the relationship?

Y = (7/2x)

  • Let’s find ways to show patterns in data & collect and display some data about the class.

Unit 6 ● Lesson 1/2

We will be able to organize data to see patterns more clearly so that we can draw a scatter plot to show data that has two paired variables.

3. In a different color, plot the height and hand span of each student in your class, making a scatter plot of the heights and hand spans for the entire class.

4. Based on your scatter plot, answer these questions:

  1. Do taller students in your class tend to have bigger hands? Explain how you know.

  • Is hand span a linear function of height? Explain how you know.

Yes, taller students tend to have greater hand spans. On the graph, as the heights increase, the hand spans tend to increase as well.

No, the hand span is not a linear function of height. (no straight line)

Plotting Data

I can draw a scatter plot to show data that has two paired variables.

Histograms or box plots are useful when displaying numerical data from a single variable.

Scatter plots are more useful when looking for a relationship between two variables that produce numerical data.

Two measures about a single person or object.
