Form: Large multi-stemmed shrub to small tree, can form thickets
Habitat: Moist to wet soil with high organic matter content, full sun to partial shade, common in pocosins, bottomlands, and other wetlands
Leaves: Oblanceolate or ovate in shape, alternate arrangement, entire margin, rounded or acute apex, tapered base, thick/leathery feel
