Jesus shared our human nature

• Like us, Jesus was mortal and was tempted

For we do not have a high priest who is unable to feel sympathy for our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are – yet he did not sin.

• This means Jesus can understand and help us in our own struggles and temptations
• Yet he overcame temptation, and was pleasing to God in every way

While he was still speaking, a bright cloud covered them, and a voice from the cloud said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased. Listen to him!’

Father and Son

• As we saw in lesson 1, Jesus was conceived miraculously by God’s power the Holy Spirit
• The relationship between God and Jesus is one of perfect love between Father and Son (John 3:35; 5:20; 14:31)
• Everything that Jesus does reflects the character and love of God his Father

Jesus gave them this answer: ‘Very truly I tell you, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.’

Sent by God

• The authority of Jesus’ powerful actions and words comes only from God

For I did not speak on my own, but the Father who sent me commanded me to say all that I have spoken. I know that his command leads to eternal life. So whatever I say is just what the Father has told me to say.

• Jesus will return to establish the Kingdom – and will eventually hand over the Kingdom to God

Then the end will come, when he hands over the kingdom to God the Father after he has destroyed all dominion, authority and power… When he has done this, then the Son himself will be made subject to him who put everything under him, so that God may be all in all.

The Holy Spirit (1)

• At his baptism, Jesus received the power of God’s Spirit ‘without limit’ (John 3:34)
• This meant that Jesus had the power to do miracles and speak God’s words
• The terms ‘Spirit’, ‘Holy Spirit’ and ‘Spirit of God’ refer to God’s power and presence – for example:
• Creating the heavens and the earth (Genesis 1:1–2; Psalm 33:6)
• Sustaining all life (Psalm 104:24–30)
• Saving people – e.g. Noah (Genesis 8:1); the people of Israel at the Exodus (Exodus 14:21)
• Given in special ways to individuals – e.g. Samson (Judges 15:14–15); David (1 Samuel 16:13)

روح القدس (۱)

• در هنگام تعمید خود ، عیسی قدرت روح خدا را «بدون محدودیت» دریافت کرد (یوحنا ۳:۳۴)
• این بدان معنی بود که عیسی قدرت معجزه و گفتن سخنان خدا را داشت

The Holy Spirit (2)

• After Jesus’ ascension, on the day of Pentecost, the first followers of Jesus were given special gifts of the Holy Spirit (Acts 2:1–4)
• This meant they could do miracles and teach with authority in Jesus’ name (Acts 2:43)
• As churches were established and the teaching of Jesus was recorded in the New Testament, there was no longer a need for these specific gifts
• But God’s power still strengthens and encourages us in our faith

May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 15:13, NIV

روح القدس (۲)

• پس از عروج عیسی ، در روز پنطیکاست ، به اولین پیروان عیسی هدایای ویژه ای از روح القدس اهدا شد (اعمال ۲:۱/۴)

The Holy Spirit (3)

• Through the power of the Holy Spirit, God is present with His people

Where can I go from your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence? If I go up to the heavens, you are there; if I make my bed in the depths, you are there.

If I rise on the wings of the dawn, if I settle on the far side of the sea, even there your hand will guide me, your right hand will hold me fast.

روح القدس (۳)

• از طریق قدرت روح القدس ، خداوند در کنار قوم خود حضور دارد

از روح تو کجا بروم؟ از حضور تو کجا بگریزم؟ اگر به آسمان فرا روم، تو آنجایی، و اگر در هاویه بستر بگسترم، تو آنجا نیز هستی!

اگر بر بالهای سحر پرواز کنم، و در دوردست‌ترین کرانهای دریا قرار گزینم، حتی آنجا نیز دست تو مرا راهنما خواهد بود، و دست راستت مرا خواهد گرفت.

Jesus – the Messiah/ Christ

• Two Bible words both mean ‘anointed one’ – one chosen to be king:
• Messiah (Hebrew – Old Testament language)
• Christ (Greek – New Testament language)
• Many Old Testament prophecies speak of an ‘anointed one’ – a future, chosen king who will rule in justice
• The New Testament shows that Jesus fulfils these prophecies – for example, when he reads from the book of Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth

‘The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favour.’

Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him. He began by saying to them, ‘Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.’

Luke 4:18–21, NIV

عیسی - مسح شده / مسیح

Jesus – our coming King

• Jesus’ disciples knew he was the Messiah (e.g. John 1:41; Mark 8:29)
• But they thought he was going to restore the Kingdom of Israel at that time (Luke 24:21)
• Jesus showed that the Kingdom of God is different – unlike political kingdoms, the way to God’s Kingdom is through self-sacrifice and love
• However, one day Jesus will return and establish God’s Kingdom on earth

When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him…

Jesus – our Lord

• Jesus is already King and Lord over all those who follow him

‘Our Father’ – coming to God through Jesus

• After his resurrection, Jesus told his disciple Mary ‘I am ascending to my Father and your Father’ (John 20:17)
• Like Mary we can now share in the close relationship between God and Jesus, and call God our Father

Because you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who calls out, ‘Abba, Father.’ So you are no longer a slave, but God’s child…

• This is why we come to God in prayer ‘through Jesus’ or ‘in the name of Jesus’ – Jesus has made this new relationship with God possible (1 Timothy 2:5)

And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil one.’
