The book summary:
A PIECE OF CAKE is a clever take on a classic story structure in which a character sets out on a journey and meets various challenges along the way. Mouse bakes a cake for his friend's birthday, but when he goes to deliver it, he gets waylaid by a string of friends asking for pieces. Because Mouse is "a very kind mouse," he trades pieces of the cake for a succession of very odd items offered him: a cork, a piece of wire. So when Mouse gets to his friend Little Bird's house, he has no cake and nothing of value to offer. But Little Bird has a clever and creative solution. The two retrace the route, trading the odd items back for ingredients to make another cake. As with the title of the story, the solution turns out to be "a piece of cake." And everyone's invited to the party!

Lesson: This lesson best follows a the prerequisite of brainstorming and collecting ideas.
Seated with the students, share the binder clip or other everyday object and ask them what it is used for. Then ask them if they can think of other uses for the object. What problems could they solve, attempt what tasks? Generate ideas, share, and record.
With students seated on the floor with you, share the bag of materials and ask the students to share what we normally use these items for in our lives.
Then, have students travel back to their learning groups and brainstorm ways to use the items from the book in different ways. Have students write and or draw the ideas that they developed on plain paper.
Next, read the story and have students predict through each step in the mouse’s journey. DIscuss the surprising events and share if they came up with any of the same solutions to the problems.
Finally, have the students use the binder clip to add another “chapter” to the story by writing and drawing a solution to a problem that mouse could solve with the binder clip.
