Thank you for considering joining the Board!

Thank you for taking time out of your schedule to consider joining the McGill Board. It’s hard to imagine a greater contribution you can make to your community than seeing to it that our children are given the education they need to succeed in today’s world.

Even if you decide against joining the Board or are not elected to the limited number of Board positions available, I hope you will be involved at the school by participating in events, meetings and (cross your fingers) the PTA we hope to establish.

What is the role of a an individual Board member?

Being a member of the Board means you personally have responsibility for the education of McGill’s students. It is not a commitment to be taken lightly. Board members must:

  • Be involved and informed regarding the school. Visit the school. Educate yourself on what’s happening at the school and in the field of Education.
  • Prepare for Board meetings. Materials are posted in advance; read them and be ready to discuss.
  • Show up. If a majority of the Board doesn’t show up, the Board can’t meet and the School suffers.
  • Speak up. Board members should participate in our meetings; your ideas and your viewpoint are critical for the School to succeed.

What skills/experience do I need to be on the Board?

The Board is a nine-member team, and benefits from having members with a mix of skills. Whatever you know and whatever you can do, the Board can use you. Whatever skills you lack, another Board member probably has them.

Some things that would be a bonus to our current Board would be:

  • Spanish fluency
  • Experience in marketing/development
  • Experience in education
  • Understanding of Ed Code or Education Law

How Will the Board Selection Process Work?

The specifics of the nominating process are as yet to be determined by the Nominating Committee. (You are welcome to stay for the Committee’s first meeting, which will happen at the conclusion of this informational session.)

  • The basic requirement from the bylaws is that the Nominating Committee nominate candidates, and that the Board elect members. The Board has scheduled that election for our (give date here) Board meeting.
  • As the Board uses Robert’s Rules of Order (RONR), we are planning to also allow nominations from the floor at that (give date) meeting, as specified in RONR.
