What is PSHE and RSE?

  • Relationships and sex education is taught through our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) curriculum

  • Relationships and Health Education is compulsory in primary schools and taught through PSHE

  • Sex education is not compulsory in primary schools, though the Department for Education

‘continues to recommend that all primary schools should have a sex education programme tailored to the age and the physical and emotional maturity of the pupils.’

  • As with the whole curriculum, PSHE including RSE, is best taught as a partnership between schools and parents

RSE at the Vineyard

  • We cover RSE in our PSHE lessons
  • We use the Jigsaw scheme of learning
  • RSE is taught in the Summer 2 ‘Changing Me’ unit
  • We recently worked together to create a bespoke Vineyard curriculum that uses Jigsaw but adapts this content to ensure it’s most appropriate for our school.

Using Scientific terms for body parts

Research has shown that the consistent use of age-appropriate scientific vocabulary throughout the school contributes to positive body image, open discussion and questioning and the development of strong personal safety skills.

The scientific language will be used throughout our planning at The Vineyard.
