GlobeMed Mission & Approach

Mission

At GlobeMed, we envision a world in which health – the ability to not only survive but thrive – is possible for all people. To act on that vision, GlobeMed mobilize a community of students and grassroots leaders to work together to improve the health of people around the world.

4

GlobeMed Leadership Practices

In a world of constant change, GlobeMed uses our core values as a compass to keep us simultaneously grounded and nimble.

Dig Deep

To understand systems and their root causes, we approach ourselves, our communities, and the world with openness, curiosity, and humility.

See Possibility

In the process of radical re-imagination, we recognize the strengths, abilities, and opportunities to grow in ourselves and our community.

Grow Together

We accompany each other, especially those most impacted, as we find our place in a diverse global movement that inspires, challenges, and sustains us.

Be Brave

We put our shared vision in front of ego and fear, seize opportunities to grow through challenges, and do what is necessary to reach our collective goals.

Follow Through

We keep our commitments to ourselves and each other and act with the highest levels of integrity and accountability.

Build Sustainably

For us all to truly thrive in the long term, we care for ourselves, our relationships, and our community so that we can collectively build towards a future vision of equity.

Cultivate Belonging

We build our movement as a space that celebrates our whole, authentic selves, recognizes the inherent value of every person, and is accountable for repairing harm.

The GlobeMed Approach

We use three strategies to strengthen the movement for global health equity. Through this approach, GlobeMed supports community health today and fosters the global health leadership and collaboration needed for tomorrow.

Developing Students into Leaders for Global Health

Supporting the Health Impact of Grassroots Organizations

+

Building Collaborative Global Network to Advance Health

Purpose of GROW

Purpose of GROW

The GROW experience offers the opportunity for GlobeMed students to form relationships with members of their partner organization and partner communities, and to reflect on the current state of the partnership in order to plan for the future. It also allows the partner organization to better understand GlobeMed’s work and mission, and to share resources and information that will help the partnership grow.

GROW Purpose & Goals

Goals of GROW

1. To build strong relationships in order to strengthen all aspects of the partnership

Relationships are at the heart of the GROW experience. During GROW, friendships and mutual understanding are fostered which inspires students and partners’ commitment to global health equity and deepens the partnership for future collaboration. The stories students hear also inform their perspective as future leaders and equip their chapter to mobilize more resources to support their partner in the future.

2. To engage in mutual learning through the collaboration on community-centered projects

Students work with partner organization staff to gain an understanding of how grassroots work and how their partner organization is addressing the barriers that their community faces. Partner organizations deepen their knowledge of the GlobeMed model and network while mentoring student interns through the management of projects and professional development opportunities. As experts of their community needs, partners collaboratively work with students on projects focused on existing organizational work and/or new supplementary projects based on partner organizational needs.

3. To collectively reflect on the strengths and areas of growth from the previous year of partnership and set goals for the upcoming year through the development of a new Annual Action Framework

GlobeMed students and partners work together to reflect on the past year’s successes, challenges, and accomplishments by assessing the data collected, stories told, progression of projects, and goals achieved. They do this in order to celebrate their efforts and to plan for the following year. This process ensures mutual accountability, learning, continued growth, and sustainability on both sides. By the end of the GROW experience, students and partners complete a draft of the next year’s Annual Action Framework. By highlighting short-term successes and setting long-term goals, GROW interns and their partner can collectively work to shape the future of their partnership. GROW Interns are also able to take these lessons learned back to their chapter to integrate them into their chapter’s on-campus experience and functions.

GROW Baseline Requirements

GROW Baseline Requirements

Outlined below are the baseline requirements for all GROW teams and experiences this year. These foundational pieces are in place to support the most fruitful, mission-aligned, and sustainable GROW experience and must be incorporated for a chapter to be eligible to participate in GROW.

  • When designing your GROW experience with your partner, please uphold these baseline requirements:
    • All GROW experiences must include at least two GROW members.
    • All GROW experiences must be at least four weeks in length, with the dates & duration determined with your GlobeMed partner.
    • All GROW participants must commit a minimum number of hours per week (determined with your partner) for the duration of the GROW experience.
    • All GROW experiences must integrate GlobeMed’s GROW goals.
    • All GROW experiences must be designed in alignment with GlobeMed’s anti-oppression statement and practices.

  • After completing your GROW experience, please uphold this baseline requirement:
    • All GROW Team participants must proactively share GROW reflections with their chapter and Headquarters.

Virtual & In-Person Best Practices (1 of 2)

Virtual & In-Person Best Practices

Below you will find some best practices for designing your GROW internship regarding team dynamics and communication, leadership transitions, and bringing back GROW. Based on whether your team will be engaging in a virtual, in-person, or even hybrid format, consider areas to especially keep a keen eye on to make sure intentional planning is given to that area.

Team Dynamics & Communication

Collaborate as a team: Invest in creating a work plan that outlines delegated roles and responsibilities in preparation for the virtual experience. This provides direction and clarity to everyone involved and will allow for a smoother planning experience. For example, be sure to mix up the different team members at the GROW Training Live Sessions.

Involve your partner in planning: Start GROW experience conversations with your partner early! The earlier you start, the more time you and your partner will have to brainstorm all the ways you can engage with one another over the summer. It will also allow ample time to intentionally include general body members and apply this year’s learnings to the future.

Utilize different methods of communication: Take the learnings you and your partner have with your communication cadence thus far to design your cadence during the GROW experience. Relationships are the focus of all of our partnerships and communication is key in cultivating them.

Virtual & In-Person Best Practices (2 of 2)

Leadership Transitions

GROW Coordinators can succeed into Directors of Partnerships positions: Given that the GROW Coordinator is intentionally working with your partner this summer, consider having them be your director of partnership the following year. This serves two purposes: 1) A guarantee that the GROW experience will be brought back to the chapter, and 2.) You will have a leader to integrate GROW experiences into chapter’s partnership goals.

Plan out partnership transition conversations: Leadership transitions (March-May) take place right before the GROW experience occurs. This means it is extremely important that the current co-presidents, director of partnerships, GROW Coordinator and team members plan out partnership transition conversations with the new co-presidents and director of partnerships so that no partnership information/experience is lost. We also recommend bringing the full eboard into these conversations as well so the partnership experience isn’t siloed but an integrated part of the chapter operations.

Bringing Back GROW

Discuss your visions for bringing back grow: GROW teams should begin brainstorming ways to bring back GROW to their chapter even before the GROW experience takes place (e.g. blogs). By doing so, the integration of partnership is intentionally built into the day-to-day chapter experience.

Keeping Your GROW Team Updated

Adding or Removing GROW Team Members

GROW Coordinators are responsible for keeping their GROW team roster updated at all times. If you need to add or remove students, please do so by clicking the links below. If you are removing a GROW Team member, once you submit the student’s name you will receive a confirmation message that they have been successfully removed. Your chapter coach will then follow up with the GROW Coordinator to confirm that the individual is indeed no longer an active GROW team member.

Questions?

If you have any questions regarding issues with updating any of your team members, please reach out to operations@globemed.org.
