Creative Art I
Students use the visual arts processes – drawing, painting, mixed media, printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, textiles/fiber arts, and architecture – as the primary curricular framework. Embedded within each unit are the five Big Ideas from the Kentucky Core Academic Standards (KCAS): Structures (Art Elements, Principles of Design), Humanity (Cultures and Time Periods), Purposes, Processes.

hue + white = Tint color becomes lighter hue + black = Shade color becomes darker
Elementof Art: VALUE…
Mono means ______
Chrom(a) means _____
A monochromatic scale is created by painting the hue in the center, white at the beginning and black at the end. Add white to the hue working from the middle outward toward the white square adding more white for each square. Do the same for the shades but with black.
Tint Hue Shade
Elementof Art: VALUE…
Grayscale
A gray scale is created by painting white in the first square and black in the last. Add a small amount of black to the white and paint the result in the next square. Continue the process getting increasingly darker.

Elementof Art: VALUE…
SHADING
There are four techniquesto show value in shading:
Elementof Art: VALUE…
Hatching - Use parallel lines to create value. The closer the lines, the darker the value.
Elementof Art: VALUE…
Cross Hatching – sets of parallel lines used together crossing in different directions.
Elementof Art: VALUE…
Stippling – technique using small dots to apply tonal value. The depth of tone and the roughness of texture can be adjusted by varying the density and distribution of the dots.
Elementof Art: VALUE…
Blending – smooth, tight shading with a gentle gradation from dark to light orlight to dark.
Can be achieved by changing the amount of pressure used in pressingthe medium (pencil, charcoal, pastel, etc.) onto the surface.
Tortillon – tool used to aid in blending; held at a slight angle prevents the point from being pushed into the body; rolled up paper with a point at the end.

The empty space between the shapes or forms is negative space.

waysan artist can create the illusion of 3-D space on a 2-D surface
There are
Overlapping

Placement on the paper
- Objects placed higher within the picture plane will appear further away.

FOREGROUND
Size
- Objects that are smaller will appear further away from the viewer.
Detail
- Objects that are further away should have less detail than objects that are closer to the viewer.
Color and Value
- Objects that are further away are cooler in color temperature, while objects that are closer are warmer. Objects that are further away are lighter in value, while objects that are closer are typically darker in value.
Perspective
- Linear perspective is a drawing method that uses lines to create the illusion of space on a flat surface.

On a two-dimensional surface, the illusion of form can be created by understanding how light reacts on the object.
The highlight is the area where light is hitting the object directly.
The midtone is the middle value of the local color of the object.
The core shadow is the area(s) that is shaded on the object.
The cast shadow is the area(s) that is shaded on surrounding objects and surfaces because of blocked light.
The reflected highlight is the area on an object that is lighter because of reflected light off of surrounding objects.
