Realistic Art: What Is It?

Realism is the art style where the subject of the painting looks very much like it appears in real life.

Realistic Art: How Do I Make It?

  • Draw objects in correct proportion.
  • Use perspective drawing techniques.
  • Include different values to show form.
  • Choose realistic colors.

Abstract Art: What Is It?

Abstraction is about painting the essence of a subject rather then the detail.

5 of 16

Abstract Art: How Do I Make It?

  • Simplify the shapes in your artwork. Make them more geometric.
  • Avoid adding in details.
  • Draw objects out-of-proportion.
  • Flatten the space by not using perspective.

Non-Objective Art: What Is It?

Non-objective art has no recognizable subject. The artwork creates an interesting composition using the elements of art.

Non-Objective Art: How Do I Make It?

  • Show something that can’t be seen, like a sound or a feeling.
  • Focus on the elements of art, like line, shape, color, and texture.

  • Your final project for this unit will be a 12x18 Non-Objective Watercolor Painting.
  • Now that you have created your sketch…
    • Redraw your design on the 12x18 paper.
    • Divide your large drawing into 4 sections using a pencil (like you did on your sketch)
    • Paint your Non-Objective drawing with watercolor. Use your small design (from the do now) to test your colors before you paint your paper.
