  • Born in today’s South Dakota.
  • The original was Jumping Badger.
  • Late 1860s and early 1870s: involved in many clashes with the U.S. Army and white settlers
  • He led war parties that attacked several U.S. forts in the Dakota Territory including Fort Berthold, Fort Buford, and Fort Stevenson.
  • Appointed a tribal chief in 1857.
  • Was also a shaman and a Holy man.
  • Had a vision before the Battle of the Little Bighorn. He saw the defeat of the 7th Cavalry commanded by George Armstrong Custer.
  • An inspiration to the Indian warriors: many believed his magical powers were the reason for the great victory.

  • Born: c. 1840 somewhere in South Dakota
  • Died: September 5, 1877 in Fort Robinson, Nebraska
  • Best known for: Leading the Sioux in their fight against the U.S. government
  • birth name was Cha-O-Ha which means "Among the Trees."
  • After the Grattan Massacre, Crazy Horse earned a reputation as a brave and fearsome warrior.
  • 1876: Crazy Horse led his men into battle against Colonel George Custer at the Battle of Little Bighorn.
  • He refused to be photographed.
  • He had a daughter named They Are Afraid of Her.
