Transportation Updates

20 of 38

Student Transportation to Northwood@Woodward

  • Every Northwood HS student is eligible for transportation to the Woodward site
  • The 19 current bus routes will be maintained for consistency and 16 additional bus routes have been added to accommodate students currently designated as walkers
  • Midday and activity buses will continue to run at the standard time, and additional shuttle routes have been assigned for athletics to ensure districtwide alignment for clubs, activities, and athletics
  • Bell times will be slightly adjusted to allow for the longer commute to and from the Woodward Center in North Bethesda

21 of 38

Transportation Eligibility

Every Northwood HS student is eligible for transportation to the Woodward Center:

  • DOT anticipates providing new bus service for nearly 700 student walkers requiring more than sixteen new bus routes.
  • DOT works with school staff and other MCPS offices to support the relocation of schools to holding facilities.
    • More than ten elementary and middle schools have successfully moved with bus service in recent years.
    • Most holding facilities are not within the schools’ home cluster.

Bus Routes

The 19 current bus routes will be maintained for consistency and 16 additional bus routes have been added to accommodate students currently designated as walkers

  • Ride times will be longer based on the geographic distances from the Downcounty Consortium catchment area to Woodward
  • Adjustments may be made based on load counts

23 of 38

Midday Programming & Activity Buses

  • Midday transportation for Edison and other special programs will continue as scheduled
  • Activity buses will continue to run at the standard 4:35 pm time with additional stops for the walk area
  • Additional shuttle routes have been assigned for athletics to ensure districtwide participation and alignment for clubs, activities, and athletics

24 of 38

Bell Times and DOT Analysis

Adjustments to bell times are determined based on the following factors in order to ensure every student is provided access to transportation:

  • Programs and services located at the school
  • Student enrollment
  • Geographic location of the holding facility
  • Draw area and cluster boundaries
  • Available and projected transportation resources
  • Afterschool activities, athletics, clubs, and midday programs.

Based on these factors, Northwood must shift their bell schedule by 20 minutes to start at 7:25 am and end at 2:10 pm.

25 of 38

DOT Commitments

Ensure every student has access to a bus morning and afternoon, including provisioning additional afterschool activity buses beyond allocated EAC Funding.

Provide bus service for students attending midday programs such as Edison, athletes and performing arts students to fields, gymnasiums, and other facilities as needed.

Partner with administrators, staff to adjust routes as needed after reviewing load counts, timing, etc.

We are always open to continuous upgrades and improvements.

Draft/Sample Bell Schedule

Proposed 2024-25 Bell Schedule

  • MCPS transportation needs required us to examine our bell schedule for 2024-25 with morning arrival and earlier dismissal.
  • These next slides are drafts/samples: Northwood and MCPS leadership will continue working based on feedback.
  • All efforts were made to preserve instructional time balanced with a more normal start time: only 1 minute per class in the models
  • The 7-period; block hybrid will remain to limit additional changes.

  • Contests - fall schedule is complete, winter and spring in June
  • Transportation - central hub at Forest Knolls ES, MCPS shuttle buses to assist

The proposed fall practice locations have been determined based on the average roster size and equipment needs. In partnership with Montgomery Parks, the following sites have been proposed:

  • Timberlawn Local Park
  • North Four Corners Local Park
  • Wheaton Regional Park
  • Forest Knolls ES

Student-athletes will use MCPS transportation to arrive at the sites except for Timberlawn Local Park. Transportation will be coordinated based on practice schedules.

Community and student tours of Woodward

Once we have delivery of the building, we will absolutely have tours! Goal is also to reimagine Back to School Night.

MC2 Transportation

MC2 transportation will continue with direct routing to Northwood @ Woodward Ctr. MCPS DOT will need enrollment and will have bus service to/from school.

To date, there are no Northwood to Montgomery College campus shuttles. However, if there were needs to shuttle students to MC (any campus), we would make arrangements to provide those services using existing communication and request protocols.
