One Sun Health (OSH) is a non-profit organization that promotes sustainable, locally driven solutions to public health challenges through community health education and social entrepreneurship initiatives in South Africa.

Each year, OSH runs a 8-10 week-long field-based internship in the Limpopo & Mpumalanga Provinces of South Africa. The internship program is designed to provide students with training and exposure to global public health research and social enterprise initiatives. Students work closely with OSH staff and community partners to expand existing programs and/or conduct research to establish new programs in areas such as malaria prevention, women’s sexual and reproductive health, and youth economic opportunity.

Students work alongside OSH staff and community partners to expand upon existing programs in areas such as malaria prevention. Students gain first-hand exposure to grassroots work with community health workers and health initiatives in rural South Africa. The students are exposed to broader socio-economic conditions in the community, informing their perspectives as future leaders in the global health field. Students spend extensive time working with local partners, fostering cultural exchanges and equipping both parties with skills and experience to further their careers and/or academic studies.

Students evaluate existing projects, and determine possible avenues for strategic and organizational growth. Together with the OSH team, they develop goals and metrics for evaluation, collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data, and write a report compiling results, outcomes and suggested next steps. Students learn to use mixed methods including design thinking and surveying in collaboration with local partners. This process ensures the ongoing sustainability of OSH programs, builds accountability, and facilitates a culture of continuous improvement.

This internship focuses on the development of local human capital. Students work with local stakeholders (the majority of whom identify as youth or women) and assist in the training of health fundamentals (i.e. identifying disease transmission, symptoms, preventive measures, and treatment options), as well as research skills such as project design, data analysis, and report writing.

Since 2011, One Sun Health has run research internships focused on the epidemiological and social-behavioral aspects of global public health in South Africa. Every summer, 2-4 students intern as OSH Coordinators on the ground for 8-10 weeks in the Limpopo and/or Mpumalanga Provinces of South Africa.
