The Unforeseen Rube Goldberg Machine

DESIGNED BY JILLIAN LUCIANO, Electrical Engineering

The Beginning...

Our Rube Goldberg projects started from nothing. Using only the bare minimum it was up to our creative minds to make it work. Our simple design used a paper towel roll ramp which the ping pong ball fell through and then hit dominos.

Using materials like popsicle sticks and clay weren’t always reliable. The tube we first used did not fit the ping pong ball, so we had to advance.

Improvements…

We were off to a great start! For our second version we incorporated some of our newly learned engineering skills. Our machine started with a pingpong ball rolling through the “SHU TUBE” and hitting a series of dominos which surround the lovely vinyl design of the SHU Emblem. Our tube did not come out exactly as planned, but it still got the job done successfully.

Change of Plans?

COVID-19 has caused us to move our projects online. There are always challenges to overcome, and this is one of them. But we must move forward. The next phase of our Rube Goldberg will take place in the comfort of our own home.

RG New World!

Working from home really allowed me to use my creative power. My final version RG is a BooK Domino Trick Shot course that shoots a ping pong ball into one LUCKY CUP! Looking back at the original design and idea, this truly is an unforeseen RG. There were many failures with the book dominos, sometimes they didn’t all fall. Also the placement of the ping pong ball was very crucial sometimes they power of the book would over power it.
