UNIT 5EARTH'S STRUCTURE

2 of 15

ATMOSPHERE

  • What is above us?

Three main spheres of our planet; atmosphere, exosphereand, hydrosphere.

3 of 15

LAYERS OF THE ATMOSPHERE

-Troposphere: closest to Earth's surface, a lot of oxygen, weather occurs here.

-Stratosphere: ozone layer absorbs the harmful ultraviolet radiation from the sun.

4 of 15

-Mesosphere: meteors burn in this layer, the top of the is the coldest part of the atmosphere.

-Thermosphere: temperature is very high because solar activity influences it.

-Exosphere: is the outermost layer. The satellites orbit Earth.

GEOSPHERE

  • What is solid part of the Earth?

The Geosphere is the solid sphere of our planet. It has three main parts:

8 of 15

1. Crust: surface of the Earth.

2. Mantle: the thickest layer of the Earth.

3. Core: the hottest layer of the Earth.

HYDROSPHERE

  • What is all of Earth's water located?

Ocean, lakes, rivers, swamps, glaciers, ice caps.

11 of 15

  • What are the processes of the water cycle?

1. Evaporation: liquid water becomes water vapour.

2. Transpiration: plants absorbs water from soil through the roots. Water escapes into the air as water vapour.

12 of 15

3. Condensation: gas is changedc into liquid.

4. Precipitation: water falls from the air as rain, hail or snow.

5. Surface run-off:

Water from precipitation runs off the surface of the Earth into lakes, streams, rivers and oceans.

6. Infiltration: some water infiltrates through porous land surface into the ground and recharges ground-water aquifers.
