What Is a Confined Space?

A space large enough for a worker to enter and perform tasks, with limited openings for entry/exit, and not designed for continuous occupancy — such as tanks, vessels, silos, pits, sewers, and ductwork.

Confined space incidents remain among the most severe hazard categories tracked by global safety bodies such as OSHA and the ILO — a large share of fatalities involve would-be rescuers with no training or equipment.
