Our Story – From Pioneer Roots to West Michigan’s Premier Wedding Venue
Briar Barns’ history begins in the mid-1800s with Joseph and Diana English, London natives who ventured into Michigan’s wilderness seeking a new life. Their son, Richard English, born in London in 1843, designed and built the farmhouse after marrying Caroline E. French in 1879.
The English family played a pivotal role in founding Sparta, running a thriving logging company and shaping the town’s future. Decades later, the property transitioned into the Stout Dairy Farm, with the larger barn—now our reception space—once sheltering cattle and echoing with the sounds of farm life.
In 2015, the Denham family discovered the vacant property. Recognizing its potential, they spent nine months reimagining it as a venue while preserving its historic integrity.
