Getting Started

Fitness Evaluation

You should evaluate your present fitness level. Your current level of physical fitness will determine where you should begin exercising and how to progress. If you aren’t a very active person then you need to start off slow. More active people can start off at a higher intensity.

Goal Setting

Goal setting is really more like setting lifestyle goals. You should include long and short-term goals that are realistic and serve as motivators. Set specific goals that are both attainable and challenging for each health related component of fitness.

Concentrate on improving your lifestyle over a long period of time. Celebrate the fact that you are on a personal trip to becoming a better person.

Equipment / What to Wear

All of our workouts have been selected to involve little to no equipment. The most important equipment is what you wear while you are exercising. Here are some simple guidelines:

Shoes

Your shoes are probably the most important piece of exercise gear. They should fit, be comfortable, and made for exercise/athletics. Don’t wear shoes that you are worried about getting dirty or creasing. Your shoes don’t have to be expensive, they just need to work.

Socks

Socks prevent direct friction of the skin against the shoes, which can cause blisters. Wear socks that fit, that are clean, and dry.

Shirts

Cotton t-shirts will provide excellent absorbency and allows for the body to breathe. Dri-fit style shirts are also a good choice so long as they are breathable.

Shorts / Sweats

No too tight, not too loose and made from breathable fabric. Working out in jeans is a bad idea.

YOU ARE EXPECTED TO DRESS OUT!

Safety Precautions

Illness

If you aren’t well, don’t exercise that day. Make sure to let your teacher know so that an alternative assignment can be provided to you.

Eating Schedule

Eat a light meal before vigorous activity; exercising before a meal may reduce appetite. If you eat too much, you may end up feeling sick. It is important to find a proper balance.

Exercising in Hot Weather

Heat Illness Prevention

  • On extremely hot days, limit exercise to indoor activities or exercise in the early morning hours.
  • Drink fluids before, during, and after activities (the average person loses 10 cups of fluid a day and more when they exercise!)
  • Wear lightweight clothing with adequate exposure of arms and legs.
