Presenters

Gail Stover taught elementary students (K,2-5) for over 13 years prior to becoming an Instructional Coach. She is in her 5th year as an Instructional Coach in District 301.

Leah Herold taught 4th grade for 9 years before taking on the role of Instructional Coach. She is now in her 3rd year as an Instructional Coach in District 301.

Both Gail and Leah taught with 1:1 devices in their classrooms and realized the potential, and challenges, of technology to support learning. Now as Instructional Coaches, they work with teachers to implement new curriculum and utilize technology purposefully in the classroom.

In the 2015-2016 school year, District 301:

  • Went to 1:1 devices in grades K-12
  • Became a Google school district
  • Adopted Canvas as their LMS
  • Switched to Skyward as a student management system/gradebook.

    • File → Page Setup →Custom →
    • Set dimensions (for portrait page size use 8.5 x 11)
    • Setting it to match page size will be helpful if printing (ebooks, study guides, notebooks, etc.)

Dropdown List in Sheets

  • Create a dropdown list in a cell in Sheets.
  • Data → Data validation
    • (or right click on cell → Data validation)
  • Criteria - List of items, enter terms in blank
  • Once created, copy & paste the cell to other cells needing the same data validation or select all cells prior to setting up data �validation.

Protect Sheets & Ranges

  • Set permissions/editing rights for a tab or range of cells. Share tabs with specific people.
  • Data → Protect Sheets & Ranges or �Right click on tab → Protect Sheet

  • Format → Alternating Colors
  • Select default styles or set custom �colors/styles

Gradient - Formatting

  • Use standard or custom gradients for filling objects or backgrounds in Slides & Drawings.
  • Fill bucket → Gradient → “Custom”
  • Backgrounds → Gradient → “Custom”
  • Change type, angles and colors. Add/remove “stops” (color changes) to fit your needs.

  • Want to disable download and copy options when sharing�a Doc, Sheet, Slideshow or Drawing?
  • Share → Advanced Options

Docs - Set Default Font

  • Type some text.
  • Change the style of that text to what you’d �like your default to be.
  • Click the Text Styles dropdown, �go to Normal Text (of whichever you’re changing).
  • Click “Update Normal Text to match.”
  • Optional: Repeat 1-4 to change any other text styles (i.e. Title, Subtitle, Heading 1, etc.) that you’d like to change.
  • Click the Text Styles dropdown again.
  • Go down to options and select “Save as my default styles.”

    • Go to the end of the URL address. Delete everything from the end of the address to the backslash
    • Replace edit and all words with copy
  • The user will then be prompted to make a copy of the file.

  • Allows the user to preview what the document is before opening. Once they click “Use Template” they have their own, editable copy of the document. It does not have the words “copy of” in the title.
