When you connect with FamilySmart, you are connecting with people who have experienced mental health and/or substance use challenges as either young people or as parents of children and youth who have struggled.

We get it and we want to help.

Working Well Together - Better Experiences … Better Mental Health

Living with and supporting mental health can be hard. We have learned from young people, parents/caregivers and professionals, what can help make it easier.

Working Well Together Training brings together young people, parents/caregivers and professionals to learn with and from each other so we can improve our experiences together.

The focus is NOT about telling the details of personal journeys or focusing on things that didn’t go well. It’s about the things we say and do that help us have good experiences together. Together, we can change our experiences to improve the mental health outcomes of young people.

Research conducted by SARAVYC & McCreary - 3 years - 2017-2020

  • 550 young people, parents/caregivers and service providers took our training.

  • 3-year grant from the Vancouver Foundation funded evaluation

  • Effectiveness of FamilySmart Practice Training:

“Evidence to suggest that the emotion-based common sense approach in the training promoted collaborative practice which increased sharing, community building and connection among participants. Participants also reported an ability and willingness to use FamilySmart Practice skills in their daily life.”

We know your priorities as educators are to focus on the whole child, including their mental health. And supporting students with their mental health can be hard.

We also know that when parents and educators work well together, children’s mental health outcomes improve, and things go better for everyone.

We want to support the relationship between homes and schools.

Educators, school counsellors, students, and families have shared some skills with us. These skills, when intentionally practiced, make it easier for all of us to work well together. And they support the connection between schools and parents, and support students’ mental health. We want to share them with you.

Working Well Together - Better Experiences … Better Mental Health

WORKSHOP 1 - Caring, Connected Relationships: When a child or youth is having a tough time because of their mental health, communication between home and school can be especially hard. How do we build relationships when things are so hard? You’ll learn the skills that help when we find ourselves judging others, or are feeling judged ourselves.

WORKSHOP 2 - Working Well Together: When parents/caregivers struggle with their kids’ mental health, they don’t always show up at their best. And that can make it hard for everyone, including you. Learn how we can prepare for these moments and use them to strengthen our home-school connections.
