What is a Chromebook?

A web browser on an inexpensive laptop
Boots up & shuts down in 5 seconds, and a charge lasts all day

Who’s using Chromebooks?

Thousands in use in our region alone
Beaver & Kane are 1:1 in secondary schools
~ 8,500 in Washington County

Chromebook?

How is it different from a regular laptop?

No traditional OS or operating system
No ‘My Documents’
No software installation
= No viruses!
Data, ‘apps’, settings, etc. follow the person, not the device

No Software? What can it do then?

There isn’t much currently that a student does on a computer these days that is not Web based
Chromebooks will do 90% for 90%
No software means no Microsoft Office or Adobe Creative Suite - Pro or Con?
Are there alternatives?

Google Drive handles the basics of Office very well, and is being improved constantly
Google Drive thrives on collaboration, and has many features that leverage life online

Revision History, Research Tool & Links, Document Translation, Integrated Image Search, easy sharing and publishing online…

Oh, by the way… Drive for Educational Domains now gives you UNLIMITED storage (well, 10 TB really)
Even if you don’t like Docs/Drive, use this for free cloud backup space for all of your documents and files!
