What I found was that most science content was made for the masses (everything on the left: science YouTube, pop science articles, science centers, etc.). This content is boiled down so that it focuses on fun facts prefaced by basic science, and it’s fun but it doesn’t make me feel like a scientist.

On the right is where professional scientists reside. That’s where I would have put myself when I was an undergraduate.

Now, the problem is this middle section that’s completely unserved, and you actually have people funneling in from both sides—you have people like me coming from the right, who study science in school and don’t pursue it afterwards. That’s about 80-85% of undergraduate natural science majors. You also have people from the left, who love science and learn so much they outgrow the material available to them. Together, they fill into this area in the middle and become what I call “Science Enthusiasts”.

Science Enthusiasts are some of science’s biggest fans, but they struggle to engage with it. They find things on the left entertaining, but not intellectually stimulating, and they get bored over time. On the right, it’s so difficult they’re almost unapproachable. Sure, I could try sitting around reading textbooks or peer-reviewed research papers all day, but frankly I’ve tried both and it’s also boring.
