Headquartered in Washington, DC, AAUW's story begins in 1881, when a small group of female college graduates banded together to open the doors for women’s career advancement and to encourage more women to pursue higher education. The history of the American Association of University Women mirrors the progress of women in the United States. AAUW is the nation’s leading voice promoting equity and education for women and girls.

We are noted for our tenacious and trailblazing advocacy for women.

Since 1888, AAUW has been one of the largest funders of women’s graduate education, investing in women who go on to change the world.
