3rd Grade Incentive Programs:

Whole Class and Individual

  • This year we have a class reward jar labeled “Superpowers Unite” and when I observe students showing the superpowers of: teamwork, respect, kindness, sharing, caring, helpfulness etc. they can earn stars in the jar. When the jar is full, they will earn a whole class reward such as an ice cream or popsicle party, movie party, pj party etc.

  • Students can each earn Raider Awards by showing respect, making good decisions, and solving problems both within the classroom and on campus. They can then save up their Raider Awards to purchase an incentive from our classroom incentives chart.

  • Students can also earn tickets when I see them demonstrating a growth mindset by problem solving, meeting both academic and social challenges head-on, and in general persevering and showing flexibility as needed. Then when a student’s ticket is drawn from the jar, he or she can choose a prize from our Superhero Treasure Chest.

SEL (Social-Emotional-Learning)

What is it?

SEL stands for Social and Emotional Learning. It’s a process through which children and adults develop:

-the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to understand and manage emotions

-set and achieve positive goals

-feel and show empathy for others

-build positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

“LIFE SKILLS”

SEL: What is it important?

Research shows that SEL not only improves achievement but it also increases social behaviors: such as kindness, sharing, and empathy. SEL improves student attitudes toward school, and reduces depression and stress among students (Durlak et al., 2011). Effective social and emotional learning will trickle from the classroom to school wide, family, and into the community. Each week we will focus on a certain topic. Some examples: disagreeing and what to do if you do, managing anger/frustration and what to do as well as having courage, bullying, self-control, kindness and fairness.

Developing A Growth Mindset In Our Learning Environment and Community

Over the next 2-3 weeks, your student will be engaging in lessons to learn:

  • The difference between a fixed and growth mindset

  • How changing our words can change our mindset, and the need to use self-talk that exhibits a belief in oneself and one’s ability to tackle new challenges.

  • The neuroscience behind it which includes learning about the parts of the brain and how our brain is “elastic” and forms new pathways when we take risks, make mistakes, and put forth continual effort when faced with a new task

  • About individuals in history who persevered through challenges, showed true GRIT, and came out on top!

  • The Power of Yet! It is a fact that in life there will be learning challenges and struggles, but when they appear, the belief in the Power of Yet is key in overcoming the challenge!

Having a Growth Mindset

Homework is Easy Breezy:

Students bring home their independent reading books each day and read for 30 minutes each night. The goal is to get great books in their hands, which fit them as readers, so they want to read for pleasure.

If not completed during the school day, a student may need to earn a GLOW green light on Reflex Math or finish up an IXL assignment. (Students track completion of these assignments daily on Reflex and IXL trackers which should always be kept in the sheet protector inside their red school to home communication folder).

3O Minutes of Reading Each Night

  • The same book should be coming to and from school each day.

  • This book should be within your student’s identified AR (Accelerated Reader) range.

  • Your student should be completing and quizzing on a book approximately every 1-2 weeks.

Becoming 1 Million Words Richer!

Is it possible? Absolutely!

With:

  • 30 minutes of independent reading at school each day
  • 30 minutes of independent reading at home each day
  • Students completing quizzes on books we read in class as part of our language arts curriculum, for teacher read aloud or with Mrs. Kinney in the library.
  • Each year approximately 500,000 words comes from reading we do in class!
  • A growth mindset

  • Students will be given time to work on these assignments in class each day.

  • The assignments given always correspond to the skills we are working on in class.

  • In order to complete an assignment, students must have a score of 80 or more.

  • When they have a score of 80 or more, they should record the score on the tracker provided. The tracker is turned in on Friday.

P.E. with Mrs. Klunk

This will be my eighth year teaching. In the past, I have taught 3rd and 4th grade, and have acted as academic support at Rescue. I’m excited to be teaching 1st-5th P.E. again this year!

Our usual P.E. day is Thursday. On shorter weeks or weeks with minimum days, this day may fluctuate as the schedule changes. These changes will be communicated through your classroom teacher.

On P.E. days, please wear closed toe tennis shoes as well as clothes that will be comfortable for running, jumping, sitting and stretching on the ground, etc.

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns: tklunk@my.rescueusd.org
