MAGNETS

  • Magnets: objects that attract, or pull on iron, nickel, and cobalt. Magnets have a north and south pole and can attract or repel other magnets.

  • Magnets are formed when groups of atoms line up in the same direction.

MAGNETIC FORCE

  • Magnetic Force: the non contact force of attraction or repulsion generated by magnetic material. Depends on strength of magnet and distance.

  • You can make small pieces of metal magnetic by sliding another magnet over it in the same direction multiple times. Like poles repel each other.

  • Magnetic Field: a field produced by a magnetic object that exerts a force on other magnetic materials.

  • Animals navigate using magnetic fields, magnets affect compass needles from a distance, and the Earth’s magnetic field protects us from solar winds and excess radiation.

ANALOG SIGNAL

  • Analog Signal: a continuous signal whose properties can constantly change, be any value and are more susceptible to distortion as noise.

  • Examples of analog signals would be human voice/speaking, photocopies, VHS movies/tapes, television signals (not cable/streaming services)

ANALOG SIGNAL

  • Your height is analog information. For convenience, we typically measure ourselves in feet and inches, but your height is not limited to those values. When you grow, you do not suddenly become one inch taller. Instead, you will slowly grow taller over time. If you grow from 5 feet tall to 5 feet and 1 inch tall, you will at some point have been every height in between those two measurements.

DIGITAL SIGNAL

  • Digital Signal: a signal that can be represented as a sequence of distinct values, are easily reproduced and less prone to distortion.

DIGITAL SIGNAL

  • Examples of digital signals are CD’s/DVD’s, flash drive data, digital clocks/watches, streaming audio/video.

DIGITAL SIGNAL

  • Digital information only exists as discrete values. For instance, if you count the number of desks in your classroom, you would never have half a desk. If you add a desk to your classroom, your classroom would suddenly just have one more desk. The number of desks in your classroom can only be certain numbers. That makes the number of desks a set of digital information.
