Appropriate Uniform Attire and Outside Wear

Khaki or Navy pants with white, light blue or Kelly Green shirts.

We normally go outside, even when it is cold so be sure your student has:

  • coat
  • hat

Attendance Matters

If your student is sick, please let us know via email or Class Dojo. You can also send in a handwritten note when your child returns to school.

Otherwise please make sure your child is at school on time each day. Learning begins right at 8:00 am and ends at 2:55 pm. Every moment counts!

Grades and Grading

Accessing PowerSchool:

my.ncedcloud.org (sign in using the student’s ID # and password which is Cmsx____ (4 digit graduation year))

Grades are updated weekly

Graded work is sent home in Thursday folders

Only tests are retaught and re-assessed for students that score below 80% on the first test. Their first grade is replaced by the most recent grade.

What’s Happening in Reading: K-2

K: We are writing a story about weather. Each child has create a character and picked major events for their character to do in a certain type of weather!

1st: We are finishing up our sun and moon unit by writing poems about what the sun can see, using adjectives and prepositions to enhance our writing.

2nd: We are closing our fossil and paleontologist module by writing narrative as if we are paleontologist using temporal words and past tense verbs to strengthen our writing.

What’s Happening in Reading: 3-5

We are all wrapping up Module 2 and moving on to Module 3. This month we will engage in middle of year testing for Dibels (3rd grade), Map (3-5) and End of Quarter tests (3-5)

4th Grade: The American Revolution

5th Grade: Athlete’s Leading Social Change

What’s Happening in Math: K-2

Math Highlights:

Kg: We are moving into solving addition and subtraction word problems to 10 using strategies/tools (these include drawing and manipulatives)

1st: We just finished our graphing unit, and will soon begin learning about place value.

2nd: We just completed topic 7 which was word problems with addition and subtraction and now we are moving on to time and money.

Math Highlights:

3rd: Multi-Step word problems and equivalent fractions

4th: Fractions, decimals and geometry

5th: Fractions, volume and algebra

Media Classes:

K-Tree research and inquiry based learning.

1st-Bird research and inquiry based learning.

2nd-Pollination & Bee research and inquiry based learning

3rd-Literature study on classics and water cycle research.

4th-Research on the American Revolution. Inequality Project based learning.

5th-Athletic Leaders & Natural Disaster research & Inquiry based learning.

Technology Classes:

K-STEM based learning on trees. Hands on activities related to EL

1st-STEM based/hands on activities centered around Birds.

2nd-STEM based/hands on activities related to Pollination

3rd-STEM based activities on water cycle.

4th-STEM based activities on problem solving centered around EL modules of study.

K/1st - Singing vs. speaking voice, Independent singing, Vocal improvisation with simple melodic patterns, Using body to express musical ideas

2nd/3rd - Identifying SO, MI, and LA with iconic musical notation, using hand signs while singing SO/MI/LA, Introduce half note in new songs and rhythm patterns

4th/5th - Introduce syncopated rhythm (ti-ta-ti), practice this rhythm using voice and instruments, Introduce staff notation and chords… Ukulele Unit coming soon! :)

K: Focusing on reviewing vocabulary, shapes, introducing a variety of materials

1st: Developing skills with new materials, pastels and weaving

2nd: Introducing collage and monoprinting based on local themes and artists

3rd: Introducing clay with a focus on NC history content

4th: Reflecting on famous artists as they relate to modern themes (cubism)

5th: Focusing on collaboration and studio style learning (mural project!)
