Understanding
the user
User research: summary
I conducted interviews and created empathy maps to understand the users I am designing for and their pain points. Primary user group included working adults who find it difficult to bake at home.
Research revealed that time was not the only factor for working adults wanting to bake at home. Other challenges included, lack of baking skills, lack of equipment, or finding a store bought product that suit their taste.
User research: pain points
Time
Users usually struggle to find time to bake bread or cake at home
Schedule
Users with a busy schedule like to plan ahead for a baked item to be home delivered or picked up from the store
Customization
Users find it difficult to find pre-baked products that suit their taste.

Neena’s journey map exhibited how an app for a bakery can help with many of the pain points.
Starting
the design
Paper wireframes
Drawing wireframes on paper helped with mapping out important features to be added that can address user pain points
Digital wireframes
After conducting initial research, wireframes were created for each page keeping the user pain points into consideration
User can pick ingredients to their liking with the customization feature

Usability study: findings
I conducted two rounds of usability study. First round of study helped guide the wireframes to mockups. The second study used a high fidelity prototype and helped guide what aspects of the prototype needed refining.
Round 1 findings
Users found the app to be useful to order a customized baked item
1
Users found that the home page can have a better layout where products were easy to find
2
Users wanted to have product size and nutritional information listed in the details.
3
Round 2 findings
Color scheme can be more gender neutral
1
The Menu icon can be accompanied by a label
The app can have more explanation overall for users that don’t frequently order online

Refining
the design
Mockups
Usability study resulted in an actionable insight where users were confused with the layout of products on the home page. The layout was changed to bring the products to the top where they are more visible

Another actionable insight was that the customization page can have ingredients and calorie information listed for users to access

Accessibility considerations
The app has a language accessibility feature where a user can choose between English, Hindi, and Gujarati languages.
User with speech impairment can use the chat option on every screen. This can also be used by anyone that has a quick question for the bakery.
For a user that is unable to understand how to navigate through the app, there is a call button on every page. This will place a call to the bakery for anyone seeking help right away.

Going forward
Takeaways
Impact:
Nehal’s Bakery App can introduce an efficient and personalized experience for frequent users ordering from a bakery. It enhances the cake ordering process with plenty of customization options for a better customer experience, helpful for Nehal’s Bakery to grow.
What I learned:
The users currently do not have access to a product that is efficient to buy baked goods from the comfort of their homes. Nehal’s Bakery app can fill this gap and increase sales as a result by attracting customers.
Next steps
Conduct research on various customization options that bakery products offer.
Detailed nutritional information can be gathered for all the products and listed along with the ingredient information.
Cakes and desserts can be easily picked when users can see them, however additional research can be made on how to describe these products effectively for a user with visual impairment.
