Math Instruction at Cresthaven Academy

Conceptual Understanding - being able to explain “why” and “how” behind mathematical concepts.

For example ~ 4 x 4 =16

Procedural Fluency - the ability to accurately, flexibly, and efficiently apply strategies and algorithms.

For example:

There are many ways to multiply 68 × 5:

  • Multiply 60 × 5 and 8 × 5, then add the sums.
  • Multiply 70 × 5 and 2 × 5, then subtract the sums.
  • Multiply 68 × 10, then divide the sum in half.
  • Rewrite 68 as 4 × 17, then multiply (4 × 5) × 17.

  • Budgeting & Finances: Managing money, calculating discounts, understanding interest rates, and budgeting for expenses require strong math skills.
  • Shopping & Sales: Calculating prices, comparing deals, and understanding percentages are common math applications.
  • Time Management: Scheduling activities, calculating travel times, and understanding time differences are all math-related.
  • Navigation & Travel: Understanding maps, distances, and directions relies on math.
  • Sports & Games: Keeping score, analyzing statistics, and strategizing often involve mathematical thinking.

How to Help Your Scholar At Home - Tips!

1. Avoid saying you’re bad at math. Stay positive!

2. Talk about math.

  • How many is that? How many would I have if I had another one?
  • What would half of that look like?
  • How could I split this equally?
  • How do you predict this trend will change over time?
  • What’s the chance of that happening?

3. Try the new math.

It's important to note that students are learning fundamental strategies that let them conceive of 6 × 3 in a way that extends to 60 × 30, 1/6 × 1/3, and 0.6 × 3,000,000.

4. Count in a variety of ways

As age-appropriate, move from counting by 1’s to counting by 2’s, 10’s, 5’s and later to counting by 6’s, 7’s, 8’s and 9’s. Count forward and backwards. Count beginning at different numbers, such as starting the count at 4 or 5

5. Be patient and take it slow

What is a Special Education Parent Advisory Group (SEPAG)?

A SEPAG (pronounced sea-pag) is a state-mandated, district-level, parent-led group that provides input on system-wide special education and related service challenges in the local school district.

“Each district board of education shall ensure that a special education parent advisory group is in place in the district to provide input to the district on issues concerning students with disabilities (N.J.A.C. 6A:14-1.2(h))”

Make-up of SEPAG Groups

  • A SEPAG (Special Education Parent Advisory Group) is a parent–school partnership created to address local special education needs.
  • It promotes collaboration between families and school leaders to improve outcomes for students with disabilities.
  • SEPAGs should be inclusive, focusing on the needs of all students with disabilities, not just specific groups or issues.
  • Parents are the heart of SEPAGs—no special training is required, just a willingness to participate and advocate.

Why should I get involved in my local SEPAG?

  • Participation in a SEPAG offers the opportunity to raise questions, voice concerns, and provide direct input to district and school leadership.

  • The great benefit of participating in a local SEPAG is that the individual needs of a child become part of “the big picture,” and can reach a broader community of children.

  • Email will go out to families asking them to join SEPAG and when our first meeting will be for this year. 25/26 meeting schedules will be sent for next year over the summer.
