Crisis Management

  • In the event of a crisis on campus (e.g., Sudden death of staff, student, or any other traumatic event on campus) Student Wellness Department works closely with school administrators to identify the scope of crisis and the level of need for support to provide comprehensive care to students, staff, and parents.

    • PSPs join “Coffee with the Principal” and present on mental health related topics such as anxiety & coping strategies

Senate Bill 224

Mental Health Instruction in Classrooms

Requires each LEA to offer mental health education in health classes.

  • The newly adopted health textbook has 2 modules dedicated specifically to mental health education
  • In addition to those specific sections, mental health education is infused into a majority of the other modules throughout the book.
  • Presentations by NAMI Glendale Chapter
  • Social Emotional Learning (SEL) lessons in the classroom
  • Presentations through Wellness Centers

Digital Citizenship and Wellness Lessons

In partnership with Pixel Health and in collaboration with ETIS, digital wellness lessons will be offered to all grade levels this year. Components of these lessons for 3rd-12th graders include:

  • Cyberbullying
    • A 2022 study found that adolescents who experienced cyberbullying were 4x more likely to report suicidal thoughts and attempts. This program helps students make informed decisions about their online behavior to protect themselves and others.
  • Social Comparison
    • Students are taught how to reduce feelings of constant social comparison with their peers and stop feeling like they are not living up to expectations.
  • Problematic Usage
    • Enhancing the positive elements of social media and minimizing the negatives.
  • Misinformation
    • Teach students the ability to discern between misinformation and valid information, which is critical to their health and education.

  • Glendale Police Department’s Substance Abuse and Wellness Resource Program
    • Support Group at Daily for at risk students
    • District wide training with GPD’s Narcotics Division
  • In partnership with Tarzana Treatment Centers 4 GUSD high schools will have a SUD counselor at their school site one day a week.
    • Daily HS, Hoover HS, Glendale HS, Crescenta Valley HS
  • Future Leaders program - 10 session groups at two high schools

Mental Health Absences & School Avoidance

  • For students experiencing school avoidance due to mental health reasons, staff will be conducting home visits to connect with students to conduct an:
    • Evaluation
    • Determine Interventions/Action plan
    • Implement Interventions

Bridge to Belonging

An 8-week curriculum designed by the Student Wellness Services Department In collaboration with the Equity, Access and Family Engagement Department

  • Equip newly immigrated students with essential skills, knowledge, and emotional support to successfully navigate the challenges of adapting to a new country, culture, and educational system while fostering their mental health and overall well-being.
  • Teaching effective emotional management and cultural adaptation strategies
  • Process emotions associated with their immigration journey
  • Assist in understanding of the process of acculturation
  • Inform them about key differences in the U.S. public school system
  • Teach them coping strategies to more effectively manage their emotions, all while building resilience

Bridge to Belonging Parent Workshops

A 3 series workshop is provided for newcomer parents exploring healthy forms of acculturation, positive coping strategies, and connecting families with community resources.

Youth Empowerment Program

  • Student Wellness clinicians in collaboration with the Glendale Police Department
  • Program for at-risk 8th-12th grade students and their parents/guardians
  • Keeping in mind that at-risk students often face challenges that can diminish their self-worth and self-concept, sessions will celebrate and recognize their strengths with a focus on empowering them to make positive life choices.
  • During the last session they will be given a tour of GPD headquarters along with a festive graduation ceremony

Individual Counseling

  • Referrals are made through the GUSD website
  • Case manager ensures that parents are in agreement before initiating the process
  • PSP is assigned to the case
  • Parent intake is conducted & consent is obtained
  • Specific counseling goals created based on individual needs
  • Targeted 1:1 intervention is provided addressing specific counseling goals
  • Typically for a duration of 12 sessions (on occasion 6 additional sessions are added)
  • If the student requires more intense and ongoing services, student is referred to community based mental health services.

Hazel Health

Mental Health Services at School and at Home

  • Hazel Health provides telehealth opportunities for students.
  • Parents/guardians and staff are able to make referrals.
  • Last year 205 students were referred to Hazel Health
  • This year 17 students have been referred to Hazel Health.
    • Majority of these students access Hazel Health services from home
