The purpose of LISD’s External PE program is to accommodate secondary students who are making a serious effort to develop higher-level skills allowing them to be involved in a physical education program that provides training exceeding those offered in LISD.
Students in grades 6-12 may apply for External PE courses offered at TEA approved facilities throughout the LISD community to earn credit for Physical Education. Online application and fee are required. (see below)
The following is a list of programs offered for LISD students:
Archery Badminton Clay Targets
Dance Equestrian Fencing
Gymnastics Ice Hockey/Dance Lacrosse
Martial Arts Rock Climbing Rowing
Synchronized Swimming Water Polo
There are two levels of External PE:
Level I requires a minimum of 15 hours of participation a week in an approved LISD off-campus activity and facility. The student is dismissed one period during the school day by arriving late or leaving early to attend the activity and must participate five days per week with 80% of the hours accumulated Monday-Friday (school week). Students may not remain on campus during the period for which they are scheduled for Level 1 External PE.
Level II requires a minimum of five hours per week with 80% of participation being accumulated from three days ; two of which must be during the school week (Monday-Friday). The student may not be dismissed from any part of the school day for Level II. Students will be scheduled at Zero Hour and middle school student will select an additional elective.
Due to various bell schedules at our middle schools, some students may not be allowed to register for Level I External PE. (see your campus counselor)
This program is not a required program and a non-refundable fee is charged for enrollment. Additionally, approved facilities will charge a fee for their instructional program.
Fees: High School fees are $150 per each semester; or $250 for all year.
To ensure External PE is reflected on your schedule before the beginning of the school year, it is best to submit your application and fees before May of the current school calendar year. The initial approval process could take up to 7 days and is then sent to school counselors for scheduling. Any application received after May 20th will not be processed until mid-August and will not be reflected on the student’s schedule until counselors process changes.
