► Way to Venus: the RTG
Space Apps Challenge 2022 – team “134”
→ Main components
We need two components: the power source and thermal insulation.
The first one will be Multi-Mission Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator.
The second one is polycrystalline fiber.
→ Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator

Our main idea is to use the RTG – Radioisotope Thermoelectric
Generator as a power source. It can serve for more than 10 years, despite having quiet low coefficient of performance.
The RTGs work by converting thermal energy into electrical energy.
Also, the RTG isn’t affected by high temperatures and pressures, which is very important for our Venus mission.
→ Polycrystalline fiber (PCW)
PCWs are made primarily of aluminum (content typically 72-99% in the oxide form), with the remainder composed of silicon.
It can withstand temperatures up to 1200º С and is resistant to chemical damaging, oxidizing or atmospheric environments. General applications include ceramic furnaces and furnace linings.
→ Conclusion
Our project will work quite efficiently and for a long time, since the use of RTGs is an excellent example of the application of nuclear processes.
Thermal insulation will allow the RTG not to heat up to high temperatures of the planet, so the RTG will not be damaged and will be an excellent battery for a rover or lander.
