5th-Grade Journalists
WIN Enrichment Newspaper Project
This project took place during our WIN enrichment block and focused on creative writing through journalism.
The 5th-Grade team’s goal was to give students an opportunity to explore writing in a real-world format while also sharing ideas and topics that matter to students.
Learning the Craft of Journalism
Before writing our articles, we learned how newspapers are organized and how journalists structure their stories.
We studied the anatomy of a newspaper, journalism vocabulary, and the inverted pyramid strategy, which helps writers present the most important information first.
Applying for Newspaper Jobs
After learning the basics, we applied for positions on the newspaper team, just like in a real newsroom.
Students worked in teams of three and were assigned sections of the newspaper where we collaborated to plan and write our articles.
Our newspaper included many different sections, such as:
Entertainement

Skills We Built
Through this project we developed many important skills including:
What We Produced
In total, our class produced 22 articles, along with comics and advertisements.
Each team researched, drafted, edited, and finalized their work before it was included in the final newspaper.
Our Published Newspaper
At the end of the project, every student received a printed copy of the newspaper, and we also created a digital PDF version so it can be shared with others.
