Arts Programs

Proposition 28

  These allocations are determined by the state

○  Per state law, 80% must be spent on staffing (inclusive of certificated and classified)

○  Per state law, up to 20% may be spent on non-staffing (materials, contracts, etc.)

○  These funds carry over at the site level for up to three years

CAP program goals:

  • Increase the variety of arts field trip experiences
  • Increase opportunities to showcase arts instruction
  • Enhance enrichment opportunities in the arts
  • Build an art programs pipeline; elementary and middle schools will attend at least 1 LAUSD secondary arts performance or exhibition
  • Build community and increase joy, wellness, attendance, and social emotional resilience through CAP activities

Supporting Student Mental Health:

Providing a Phone-Free School Day

Board Resolution 035-23/24

The district is committed to supporting mental health and well-being so that students feel safe, welcomed, excited to learn and are Ready for the World!

  • The resolution calls for no phones for the entire school day

  • Increase student interaction, classroom engagement

  • This new policy was developed to align with California and Federal legal requirements, for implementation beginning the second semester of the 2024/25 school year.

On June 16, 2024, the Los Angeles Unified Board of Education adopted Res-035-23/24, “Supporting Student Mental Health and Learning Ensuring a Phone-Free School Day.”

That Resolution called for the following:

  • Supporting student mental health while creating environments where students feel safe
  • A phone-free school day will result in an Increase in academic performance.

Implementation will happen in a phased approach, as outlined in the table below. This IOC provides detailed guidance on Phase 1 (late October – December 13, 2024), with additional guidance to follow for Phases 2 and 3.

Policy Summary and Overview

  • The new policy has been developed to align with California and Federal legal requirements, for implementation beginning the second semester of the 2024/25 school year

  • Schools will meet LSLC and will have the option to select one or more of the options described to implement

  • Once decided schools will place order for their selected items if any

  • School leadership will message all stakeholders using the Communication toolkit provided

  • Implementation will happen in a phased approach
