under the theme of Adaptability

For this Mid-Autumn Festival Task, I baked some modern mooncakes. It is made with sweet potato crust and mung bean filling with a hint of salted egg.

The theme that was chosen for this year is adaptability. I have adapted by making moon cake out of ingredients that I could find at home. In addition, this version of moon cake is also healthier, which is suitable for keeping a good health during the pandemic.

“Tet Trung Thu” or Mid-autumn festival, is also known in Vietnam as Children’s festival.

In the picture, I have a handmade lantern, according to the myth, children parade lanterns in the streets the night of the Mid-autumn Festival to help light the way to earth for Cuội from the moon. My 2 star-shaped lanterns also originated from a lovelorn king who created them a long time ago. There are a lot of mooncakes on the table, they come in a seemingly infinite variety of flavors, both sweet and savory, our family often offer the food to our ancestors and worship. Lastly, there are 2 grapefruits and 3 apples as desserts, which our family always gather around and eat every year. It is one of the best moments in my life as we share our stories, jokes, or talk about life.

I created this mask that can be worn during the Vietnamese Mid Autumn festival. And this mask can be worn to represent some sort of character and to have fun during the mid-autumn festival. And this mask shows the feeling of people in lockdown wanting to go out and celebrate and have fun.

I made a drawing about persimmons. This kind of fruit often comes out in autumn in Vietnam.

People in Vietnam often display them on fruit tray in mid-autumn festival with moon cakes. When people see the persimmons, they know mid-autumn festival is here. When being green persimmons are not delicious, but the skin of the green persimmon is still beautiful. When persimmons are ripe the color turns into orange red, but it looks even more beautiful when it’s green. When the persimmons are ripe, they will taste better and sweeter, and they smell good. The persimmon makes the fruit tray more beautiful. On the fruit tray, grapefruits and bananas are green or yellow, persimmons are orange and red. Moon cakes put next to the fruit tray are white and brown (if they are baked). There are also lanterns that are red and green. It’s a beautiful combination of the colors.

This is an illustration of 2 little toddlers half-asleep and yet, still having a fun time with each other. As you may know, "Tết Trung thu," can also be called "Tết thiếu nhi," which also means "International Children's day" in english! What are the 2 toddlers so fascinated about? In their hands, they're holding traditional Vietnamese toys that are very popular especially during the Mid-Autumn festivals. They are called, "Đèn ông sao," and "Đèn lồng." These are simply a wand with a giant star on the top and, a handmade lantern. Have you tried playing with them before?

Next, as the theme of this event is adaptations, I have included the drawing of face masks to represent the pandemic right now! Also, as you can see, the children aren't on land, they are in the sky. This is because I wanted to create a dreamy environment because, if we can't celebrate "Tết Trung thu," out with our families, i'll make the most of what I have and just enjoy "Tết Trung thu," in my dreams. This may sound quite sad but, let's all stay positive and enjoy every single little moment we have now! Even if, it was just some dream you had last night.
