https://arxiv.org/pdf/2302.02083.pdf��The "Theory of Mind" is a concept from psychology and cognitive science that refers to the ability to attribute mental states—beliefs, intents, desires, emotions, knowledge, etc.—to oneself and to others, and to understand that others have beliefs, desires, intentions, and perspectives that are different from one's own.

This ability is considered a crucial element of human social interactions, as it allows us to predict and interpret the actions of others, as well as to understand and engage with others on a deeper, more empathetic level.

Theory of Mind develops during childhood, typically between the ages of three and five, although some aspects continue to develop beyond this age. It is often assessed using "false-belief tasks," where children are asked to predict a character's actions based on the character's beliefs, which the child knows to be false. For example, a typical false-belief task might involve a story where a character puts a toy in a box and leaves the room, another character then moves the toy, and the child is asked where the first character will look for the toy when they return.

Impairments in Theory of Mind are associated with several neurological and psychiatric conditions, including autism spectrum disorder, schizophrenia, and some personality disorders. This has led to a significant amount of research aimed at better understanding the neural and cognitive mechanisms underlying Theory of Mind.
