Shakopee Work-Based Learning Program

Work-Based Learning is an approved program through the Minnesota Department of Education. Work-based learning is a structured academic program where students engage in real-world activities with instruction occurring both at school and at a community-based setting with an employer (MDE)

Experiences include:

• Job Shadowing
• Career Mentors
• Apprenticeships (paid/unpaid)
• Internships (paid/unpaid)

CAREER MENTORSHIP ORIENTATION

A mentor is an experienced professional who provides informal guidance to beginners as well as experienced professionals for career growth. Being in a mutually beneficial professional relationship, the mentor has the mentee's best interests at heart and adopts a flexible mentorship style to meet the latter's needs (Carruthers, 2022)

What Responsibilities Does a Mentor Have?

• Interview and select student
• Supervise, train and guide student
• Insure safety of student
• Act as a role model
• Provide frequent feedback to student
• Thoughtful guidance
• Understanding of student’s stressors outside of work
• Contact WBL coordinator when assistance is needed

What Responsibilities Does a Mentor have in Record Keeping?

• Help coordinator develop an appropriate list of skills
• Coordinate hours
• Evaluate student
• Evaluate program
• Document safety training and instructions
