POSITIVE STUDENT RESPONSE

First2 Network is using an improvement science approach to try to change systems in higher education to better support rural, first generation and other underrepresented STEM majors, especially in the first two years of college.

Goal: to have STEM students meaningfully connected with faculty, staff, and peers in ways that promote belonging (fit), wellness, resilience, and financial stability.

The participating STEM students found great value in the SciTech Social event. Increased participation would provide a more complete illustration of what first2 has to offer.

There is a need to engage more students and further focus on first-generation STEM majors, additional First2 Focus students, and questions to determine student engagement.

There is a need to diversify academic departments and opportunities to use events to motivate STEM students to engage with the program. In addition, there is room to expand the survey to more clearly identify successes and challenges

What visualizations, charts or graphs might be helpful in representing the data so that it is more approachable by the team in answering their learning questions?

As shown by my presentation I am focused on visuals. I believe graphs can tell the story with images, and I can tell the story verbalizing those visuals.

Does this survey response file provide the team with all the data they need to answer their learning questions?

I do not. The data set is too small to gain an accurate assessment of the full potential of the program. Therefore, further student participants and additional questions could provide a more complete assessment of what First2 has to offer.

What more might they need to collect?

As scheduled, the additional data from the end of term questionnaires to students and faculty would be helpful to this project. However, the faculty information needs to be determined. In addition, First2 focuses on rural and underrepresented students. Questions to determine these qualifications would add to the overall analysis.
Additionally, I think it would be helpful to determine student engagement by questioning how likely they are to recommend the program, what struggles/obstacles they have encountered (providing known obstacles & evaluating by numerical values), and do they see themselves participating in future events.
I also think known statistical information would be helpful. Such as zip codes and GPAs.

How would you guide the team in studying this data?

First, focus on the positive. The overwhelming impression was optimistic, the event was well planned, and the participants were engaged by all measures. Second, look at where improvements can be made, for instance in career service awareness, connecting with other STEM majors, and interaction with professors. Use this data to move the program forward!

Finally, based on your own review of the data, what would you say personally about the effectiveness of the event?

The SciTech Social event provided STEM students encouragement, engagement, and knowledge that will help them on their journey. There is much to be done, but this event was a great start. It paved the way to reach students and increase the graduation percentages.

What recommendations might you suggest to the team or network about future such events?

Peer to peer outreach could broaden the attendees when looking for participants.
I also think more encouraged interaction through games would help by creating competition but not silos (professors v. students, department v. department, academic year v. academic year), and a focus on incorporating departments and academic years.
