GOAL D2: Passenger and Naturalization Records

Choice A:

“FS: Unlock Your Family Story …”

- Briefly review each of the three major eras in passenger records and the types of information they contain.

“AAC: Eras of Passenger Lists”

- Watch from 0:17 to 2:11 and discuss passenger records kept before 1820.

- Watch from 3:04 to 5:08 and discuss passenger records from the 1820s-1890s.

- Watch from 5:08 to the end and discuss passenger records from the 1890s-1957.

“AC: U.S. Major Ports of Entry”

- Scroll the the article and briefly mention and describe the major ports for passenger arrival in the U.S. Recommend this article for learning more details about individual ports of arrival.

“AC: 10 Things to Know …”

- Scroll down to item #10: Next Steps (page 4).

- Briefly review each of the items on the page (A-O) for passenger record information to be aware of. Page 5 has examples of an actual passenger record and where the info items are found.

- Tips: Open the article again in a separate window, so you can show page 4 and page 5 in separate browser tabs. Click the 3-line icon in the upper left to remove the page previews, and size the windows so you can see them side-by-side. Zoom in to about 150% on page 5. Then correlate the notes on page 4 with the letter icons on page 5 to illustrate the fields.

Search:

“Ellis Island Passenger Search”

- Click the database link. Briefly explain that the search filters that appear below the search fields.

- In the search fields type “Stanley Kramer” (or another name) and click Results. Then hover over the icons for Passenger Record and Ship Manifest and mention that a free user account is required to see the record information.

“Immigrant Ships”

- Open the Immigrants Ships link.

- Select a volume from the links at the top of the page, such as Volume 2, and scroll down below the horizontal link to see search categories.

- In the bold “Surnames and Captain’s Names” section, click a letter link, such as “C-Cd” and scroll down to show surnames.

- Click the corresponding ship link to see the complete passenger list.

Passenger Search Practice:

- Click the link for “Passenger Search Practice #1” and explain that many practice exercises are available in The Family History Guide, based on QUIKLinks to record collections.

- Read the text for the practice exercise; then click Hints and describe the additional hep information. Mention that the Answers link shows the answers to the practice questions (don’t actually click the Answers link, so others can try the exercise later).

Choice B:

“Notes on Naturalization”

- In Was Your Ancestor Naturalized, briefly review the bullet points in this section to see the likelihood of an ancestor being naturalized (becoming a United States citizen).

“FL: Back to the Basics …”

- In Why Use Naturalization Records, summarize and discuss the second paragraph, to show possible benefits for finding and using these records.

- In The Naturalization Process, scroll to the bottom of the section and review the five steps for becoming a citizen.

- Scroll down to Tips for Naturalization Records and briefly review each tip.

- In U.S. Federal Census Records … briefly review the types of naturalization information included in each census version.

“Record Search Practice”

- Click the link for the first exercise and briefly review the info. This is an example of an exercise that can be done during or after the class. Then click the Hints link to show help info. Explain that the Answers link has the answers to the items in the problem statem, but don’t open the Answers link.

“QUIKLinks”

- Briefly scan the list of QUIKLinks and demonstrate one of them, to show how easy it is to access a record collection from a QUIKLink.
