Introduction of Bowie & Dick Test

  • Developed by Dr. J. Bowie and

Mr. J. Dick in 1963.

  • Evolution and upgrade to “16 towel chalange”.

  • To check that the autoclave sterilizer is functioning properly, the Bowie & Dick Test are carried out before the autoclave sterilizer is used.

  • Ensure that air is properly removed from the sterilisation chamber
  • And loads are fully penetrated with steam

Pass – Sterilizer is functioning in good conditions

Pass – Sterilizer is showing sign of failure. Sterilizer servicing is required.

Fail – Sterilizer must be shutdown, pending repair and may need re-qualification if repair is deemed significant.

Overexposure gray or silvery appearance, overexposure (time and/or temperature) is indicated; a retest is required since the test is invalid.

Why is it important?

  • To confirm the effectiveness of the initial vacuum phase and, therefore, how well steam penetrates cavities.
  • To detact : -
  • Clogged drain lines, ventilation line or water filter.
  • Leaks caused by incorrectly sealed doors or other defects.
  • Low steam pressure.
  • Water temperature too high.
  • Poor quality of steam.
  • Variations in steam supply.
  • Steam condensation.
  • Non-condensable gases.
